ABSTRACT This specification applies to electric-fusion (arc)-welded straight seam or spiral seam steel casing pipe with diameter of 10 in. (254 mm) and larger (outside diameter as specified by purchaser) and wall thickness of 0.200 in. (5.1 mm) or greater. It shall be permissible to specify and furnish pipe having other dimensions provided such pipe complies with all other requirements of this specification. The pipe is intended for use as casing or encasement in horizontal underground boring, tunneling, or open trench applications. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers electric-fusion (arc)-welded straight seam or spiral seam steel casing pipe NPS 10 (Note 1) and larger in diameter (outside diameter as specified by purchaser) with wall thickness 0.200 in. [5.1 mm] or greater. It shall be permissible to specify and furnish pipe having other dimensions provided such pipe complies with all other requirements of this specification. The pipe is intended for use as casing or encasement in horizontal underground boring, tunneling, or open trench applications. 1.2 This specification is expressed in both inch-pound units and in SI units; however, unless the purchase order or contract specifies the applicable M specification designation (SI units), the inch-pound units shall apply. The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard. 1.3 The text of this specification contains notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. Such notes and footnotes, excluding those in tables and figures, do not contain any mandatory requirements. 1.4 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Sections 11, 12, and 13 of this specification. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Note 1: The dimensionless designator NPS (nominal pipe size) has been substituted in this standard for such traditional terms as “nominal diameter,” “size,” and “nominal size.” 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM A1097/A1097M-22 is the international standard specification for carbon steel electric-fusion (arc)-welded casing pipe in sizes NPS 10 (10 in./254 mm outside diameter) and larger, with wall thickness of 0.200 in. (5.1 mm) or greater. Developed by ASTM International, this standard establishes minimum requirements for the manufacture, testing, inspection, and delivery of steel casing pipe intended for use as casing or encasement in horizontal underground boring, tunneling, or open trench applications. The standard applies to both straight seam and spiral seam welded pipe and allows for both inch-pound and SI units for international compatibility.
Key Topics
-
Pipe Sizes and Wall Thickness
- Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) 10 (10 in./254 mm) and larger
- Minimum wall thickness of 0.200 in. (5.1 mm)
- Custom dimensions may be specified if other requirements are met
-
Manufacturing Requirements
- Electric-fusion (arc)-welded process for straight seam or spiral seam pipes
- Welds must be complete penetration butt joints
- Acceptable steel materials include those conforming to several ASTM standards (e.g., A36, A515, A516, A572, A1011, A1018)
-
Testing and Inspection
- Mechanical testing per ASTM A370
- Reduced-section weld tension tests for each lot of pipe
- Thorough inspection for surface imperfections, roundness, straightness, and wall thickness
- Inspection and rejection criteria ensure only compliant pipes are supplied
-
Pipe Ends and Marking
- Options for plain, beveled, or interlocking joint ends
- Each pipe length must be clearly marked with the manufacturer, size, wall thickness, length, minimum yield strength, and specification designation
-
Documentation and Certification
- Certification of compliance and test reports are furnished when specified by the purchaser
Applications
Steel casing pipe produced to the ASTM A1097/A1097M-22 standard is essential in a variety of infrastructure and utility projects requiring robust, reliable encasement in underground construction. Key applications include:
- Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD): Protection of boreholes during trenchless installation of utilities crosses roads, railroads, waterways, or other obstructions.
- Tunneling and Boring: Providing structural support and protecting conduits, cables, or fluids in tunnel construction and large-diameter boring operations.
- Open Trench Installations: Casing or encasement of pipelines in open cut trenches for water, sewage, oil, gas, and utility lines.
- Pipeline Protection: Serving as sleeving or encasement to shield pipelines from external forces, corrosion, or soil movement.
The specification ensures products meet stringent performance and durability criteria for demanding field environments.
