ABSTRACT This specification covers austenitic steel castings for valves, flanges, fittings, and other pressure-containing parts. The steel shall be made by the electric furnace process with or without separate refining such as argon-oxygen decarburization. All castings shall receive heat treatment followed by quench in water or rapid cool by other means as noted. The steel shall conform to both chemical composition and tensile property requirements. SCOPE 1.1 This specification2 covers austenitic steel castings for valves, flanges, fittings, and other pressure-containing parts (Note 1). Note 1: Carbon steel castings for pressure-containing parts are covered by Specification A216/A216M, low-alloy steel castings by Specification A217/A217M, and duplex stainless steel castings by Specification A995/A995M. 1.2 A number of grades of austenitic steel castings are included in this specification. Since these grades possess varying degrees of suitability for service at high temperatures or in corrosive environments, it is the responsibility of the purchaser to determine which grade shall be furnished. Selection will depend on design and service conditions, mechanical properties, and high-temperature or corrosion-resistant characteristics, or both. 1.2.1 Because of thermal instability, Grades CE20N, CF3A, CF3MA, and CF8A are not recommended for service at temperatures above 800 °F [425 °C]. 1.3 Supplementary requirements of an optional nature are provided for use at the option of the purchaser. The Supplementary requirements shall apply only when specified individually by the purchaser in the purchase order or contract. 1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.4.1 This specification is expressed in both inch-pound units and in SI units; however, unless the purchase order or contract specifies the applicable M-specification designation (SI units), the inch-pound units shall apply. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets or parentheses. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM A351/A351M-24 is the standard specification covering austenitic steel castings used for pressure-containing parts, such as valves, flanges, fittings, and similar components. Issued by ASTM International, this specification defines requirements for material composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment, inspection, and quality, aiming to ensure safe and reliable usage in high-pressure and often corrosive environments. The austenitic steel grades included are selected for their excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and suitability for severe service conditions.
The standard is applicable to both inch-pound and SI units, supporting international adoption and manufacturing practices. ASTM A351/A351M-24 complies with globally recognized standards development principles, making it a leading reference for pressure equipment in chemical, petrochemical, power generation, and other critical industries.
Key Topics
- Material Scope: The specification applies to a range of austenitic steel grades, each offering varying levels of corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. The selection of a specific grade depends on the intended service conditions, including temperature and the severity of the corrosive environment.
- Manufacturing Process: Steel castings covered must be produced by the electric furnace process, with optional secondary refining like argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD) to improve purity and properties.
- Heat Treatment: All castings must undergo a specified heat treatment regimen, typically solution annealing followed by rapid cooling, to optimize corrosion resistance and achieve required mechanical properties.
- Mechanical and Chemical Requirements: The standard includes detailed criteria for chemical composition and tensile properties, helping ensure materials perform as required in demanding applications.
- Quality and Inspection: Castings are subject to visual inspection for surface quality as well as optional supplementary testing such as radiography or liquid penetrant inspection, as specified in the purchase order.
- Repair and Welding: Procedures for weld repair are defined, including standards for post-weld heat treatment and inspection, to maintain casting integrity.
Applications
Adherence to ASTM A351/A351M-24 ensures that austenitic steel castings are suitable for:
- Valves: Used in pipelines and process systems, especially where corrosion resistance is critical.
- Flanges and Fittings: Connection components in piping systems that must withstand internal pressures safely.
- Pressure-Containing Equipment: Components in boilers, reactors, heat exchangers, and pressure vessels in power plants, oil refineries, chemical plants, and other industries demanding high reliability.
- Severe and Corrosive Service: Applications involving high temperatures or corrosive fluids, thanks to the enhanced durability and integrity provided by austenitic stainless steels.
The rigorous requirements of ASTM A351/A351M-24 help industries minimize risks of leaks or failure, supporting long-term safety and regulatory compliance.
Related Standards
For proper material selection and system integration, ASTM A351/A351M-24 should be considered alongside these related ASTM and industry standards:
- ASTM A216/A216M: Specification for carbon steel castings for pressure-containing parts.
- ASTM A217/A217M: Covers martensitic and alloy steel castings suitable for high-temperature service.
- ASTM A995/A995M: Specification for duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel castings.
- ASTM A703/A703M and A985/A985M: Define general and investment casting requirements, including supplementary inspection and testing provisions.
- ASTM A488/A488M: Practice for qualifying procedures and personnel for welding of steel castings.
- MSS SP-55: Visual inspection standard for steel castings used in valves, flanges, and fittings.
Choosing and specifying the correct standard ensures the right material properties and testing regime, promoting quality, performance, and safety in pressure-containing applications.
