ABSTRACT This specification establishes the requirements for copper-based brass or bronze centrifugal castings. Mechanical properties are determined from test bar castings and should meet the requirements listed herein. Brinell hardness readings should be taken on the grip end of tension test bars. All castings should not be repaired by welding without customer approval. UNS C95520 copper alloy castings are used in the heat treated condition only. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers requirements for centrifugal castings of copper-base alloys having the nominal compositions shown in Table 1. 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B271/B271M-23: Standard Specification for Copper-Base Alloy Centrifugal Castings is a globally recognized standard maintained by ASTM International. This standard specifies the essential requirements for manufacturing, ordering, and testing of copper-based centrifugal castings, which include alloys like brass and bronze. The document outlines quality, dimensional, mechanical, and chemical property expectations, ensuring suitability for a wide range of industrial applications, particularly where strength and corrosion resistance are critical.
Key Topics
- Material Requirements: The standard covers a wide range of copper-base alloys, including various brasses, bronzes, manganese bronzes, aluminum bronzes, nickel-aluminum bronzes, and other specialty alloys, each defined by specific UNS numbers and chemical composition requirements.
- Ordering Information: Purchasers must specify details such as alloy UNS number, casting condition (as-cast or heat-treated), dimensions, and compliance with codes (such as ASME) upfront for consistent quality and traceability.
- Mechanical Properties: Physical requirements such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and Brinell hardness are established for each alloy-mechanical tests are typically performed on separately-cast test bars.
- Chemical Composition: The standard requires strict adherence to specified chemical content for each alloy to guarantee performance, with analysis methods outlined in referenced documents.
- Welding Restrictions: Repair by welding is generally prohibited unless explicitly approved by the customer, protecting the integrity and safety of finished castings.
- Heat Treatment: Certain alloys, such as UNS C95520, must be supplied in heat-treated condition only, and optional temper annealing is recommended for improved seawater corrosion resistance.
- ASME Compliance: The standard can be adopted for ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code applications with additional marking, testing, and certification requirements.
Applications
Copper-base alloy centrifugal castings produced to ASTM B271/B271M-23 are widely used in various demanding service environments due to their durable mechanical properties and resistance to corrosion. Common application areas include:
- Industrial Equipment: Bushings, bearings, gears, and pump components requiring high strength and wear resistance.
- Marine and Seawater Systems: Propellers, valve bodies, and parts exposed to saltwater service, benefiting from corrosion-resistant alloys like nickel-aluminum bronze.
- Power Generation: Components in turbines and generators that must withstand high stress and corrosive media.
- Oil & Gas: Valves, fittings, and other cast products for refineries or offshore platforms, leveraging alloy versatility.
- Heavy Machinery: Cast parts for construction, mining, and agricultural equipment where impact resistance and reliability are vital.

Practical Value
Adhering to ASTM B271/B271M-23 delivers confidence in the quality and reliability of copper-base alloy centrifugal castings, enabling manufacturers and end-users to achieve:
- Consistent Product Performance: Tight control of mechanical and chemical properties maintains integrity and safety.
- Global Market Access: Compliance with internationally accepted standards facilitates trade and procurement.
- Streamlined Procurement: Clear ordering guidelines and referenced standards simplify supplier communication and reduce error.
- Design Flexibility: A broad spectrum of alloys covers diverse engineering requirements, from general-purpose to highly specialized environments.
- Enhanced Durability: Recommendations for proper heat treatment and material selection help maximize long-term performance across applications.
For copper-base alloy centrifugal castings, following ASTM B271/B271M-23 is essential for ensuring optimal quality, safety, and fit-for-purpose application in modern industry.
