SCOPE 1.1 This specification2 covers UNS N08120, UNS N08890, UNS N08800, UNS N08810, and UNS N088113 in the form of rolled plate, sheet, and strip. Alloy UNS N08800 is normally employed in service temperatures up to and including 1100 °F (593 °C). Alloys UNS N08120, UNS N08810, UNS N08811, and UNS N08890 are normally employed in service temperatures above 1100 °F (593 °C) where resistance to creep and rupture is required, and they are annealed to develop controlled grain size for optimum properties in this temperature range. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B409-22: Standard Specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium Alloy Plate, Sheet, and Strip is a crucial international standard developed by ASTM International that defines requirements for several high-performance alloys in flat-rolled forms. Specifically, it covers five key alloys: UNS N08120, UNS N08890, UNS N08800, UNS N08810, and UNS N08811, which are widely used in demanding thermal and corrosion-resistant applications. The standard details chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment, permitted variations in dimensions, and marking requirements, ensuring consistent product quality and performance throughout global supply chains.
Key Topics
- Scope of Application:
- Covers nickel-iron-chromium alloys in plate, sheet, and strip forms.
- Applicable to service at high temperatures, particularly for alloys where creep and rupture resistance is vital.
- Alloy Designations:
- UNS N08120, UNS N08890, UNS N08800, UNS N08810, UNS N08811.
- Service Temperature Guidelines:
- Alloy UNS N08800: up to 1100°F (593°C).
- Alloys UNS N08120, N08810, N08811, N08890: for temperatures above 1100°F (593°C), with controlled grain size for enhanced high-temperature properties.
- Product Forms and Conditions:
- Supplied as rolled plate, sheet, and strip in annealed or as-rolled tempers.
- Available with different surface finishes (oxide, descaled, bright annealed) tailored to fabrication and end-use requirements.
- Dimensional Tolerances:
- Detailed permissible variations in thickness, width, length, squareness, straightness, and flatness to ensure suitability for a broad range of industrial fabrication needs.
- Mechanical Properties and Grain Size:
- Specifies minimum tensile and yield strength, elongation values, and required grain size for each alloy to maintain integrity in high-stress and high-temperature environments.
- Ordering Information:
- Guidance to purchasers on specifying critical features such as alloy, temper, finish, dimensions, edge configuration, and testing/certification requirements.
Applications
Nickel-iron-chromium alloys specified in ASTM B409-22 are engineered for robustness in aggressive service conditions, making this standard highly relevant for industries requiring superior resistance to heat and oxidation. Typical application fields include:
- Petrochemical Processing: Heater tubes, heat exchangers, furnace components, and reformer parts exposed to extreme temperatures and corrosive environments.
- Power Generation: Components for boilers and turbine engines operating above conventional material temperature thresholds.
- Chemical Industry: Vessels and piping systems where both corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength are mandatory.
- Thermal Processing Equipment: Industrial ovens, kilns, and other high-temperature handling systems.
- Nuclear Sector: Structural elements exposed to high radiation and elevated operational temperatures.
With stringent controls on alloy composition and manufacturing processes, materials conforming to ASTM B409-22 ensure long operational lifespans, enhanced safety, reduced maintenance, and regulatory compliance across vital sectors.
Related Standards
Users of ASTM B409-22 should be aware of complementary and referenced standards to ensure full compliance and optimal material selection:
- ASTM B408: Specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium Alloy Rod and Bar.
