ABSTRACT This specification covers nickel-molybdenumchromium-iron alloys (UNS N10003 and UNSN10242) plate, sheet, and strip for use in general corrosive service. Alloys in the form of sheet, strips, and plates may be hot or cold rolled, annealed, and descaled. Physical properties like grain size, weight, thickness, width, length, straightness, squareness, flatness, and edges of the specimens shall be determined. Plate and sheet mechanical properties like tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation shall be measured. SCOPE 1.1 This specification2 covers nickel-molybdenum-chromium-iron alloys in the form of plate, sheet, and strip. The alloys are typically for general corrosive service, but are not limited to this usage. 1.2 Alloys that can currently be certified to this specification are UNS N10003 and UNS N10242.3 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to become familiar with all hazards including those identified in the appropriate Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for this product/material as provided by the manufacturer, to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices, and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B434-22 is the standard specification developed by ASTM International for nickel-molybdenum-chromium-iron alloys plate, sheet, and strip products. This specification covers alloys such as UNS N10003 and UNS N10242, which are primarily used for general corrosive service. The standard details the production, physical, and mechanical property requirements for these flat-rolled products, ensuring consistent quality and performance in demanding applications. It also establishes guidelines for product dimensions, manufacturing processes, heat treatment, and product marking.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
- Covers nickel-molybdenum-chromium-iron alloys in the form of plate, sheet, and strip
- Applied mostly for general corrosive service, but not limited to such applications
- Applies specifically to alloys designated as UNS N10003 and UNS N10242
-
Product Forms and Manufacturing
- Sheet and strip: hot or cold rolled, annealed, and descaled, or bright annealed
- Plate: hot rolled, annealed, and descaled
-
Physical and Mechanical Requirements
- Thorough documentation on grain size, thickness, width, length, straightness, squareness, flatness, and edge conditions
- Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation are established for reliable performance
-
Chemical Composition
- Defines the required percentages for primary alloying elements: nickel, chromium, molybdenum, iron, carbon, and others
- All chemical requirements are consistent with the referenced chemical check analysis limits
-
Dimensional Tolerances
- Detailed permissible variations for thickness, width, length, and straightness
- Requirements for squareness and flatness to ensure consistent fabrication quality
-
Product Marking and Traceability
- Mandates clear marking of each product with alloy designation, specification number, heat number, and manufacturer identification
Applications
The ASTM B434-22 specification is integral for industries requiring high-performance nickel-based alloys with excellent corrosion resistance. Key applications include:
- Chemical Processing Equipment
- Storage tanks, piping, and reactors that encounter aggressive chemical environments
- Petrochemical and Oil & Gas Sectors
- Components subjected to sour gas, acids, or chlorides, such as heat exchangers and pressure vessels
- Power Generation
- Systems exposed to harsh conditions, including flue gas desulfurization units
- Marine Environments
- Structures and machinery at risk of saltwater corrosion
- Pharmaceutical and Food Industries
- Facilities where purity and corrosion resistance are critical for safety and hygiene
Utilizing plate, sheet, and strip certified to ASTM B434 ensures optimal material performance, longevity, and regulatory compliance in challenging service conditions.
