SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 Metals are electroplated on magnesium for various purposes: solderability, RF grounding, hermetic sealing, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, appearance, and electrical conductivity, for example. Because magnesium is covered with a naturally occurring oxide film, usual procedures for the preparation of metals for autocatalytic or electrolytic plating cannot be used. SCOPE 1.1 This guide describes two processes used for plating on magnesium and magnesium alloys: direct electroless nickel plating and zinc immersion. Some users report that the direct electroless nickel procedure does not produce quite as high a level of adhesion as zinc immersion. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific hazard statements, see 5.1.1 and 5.2.9.2. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B480-88(2022), Standard Guide for Preparation of Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys for Electroplating, provides comprehensive procedures for preparing magnesium and its alloys prior to the application of electroplated metal finishes. Magnesium materials present unique surface preparation challenges due to their naturally occurring oxide layer, which complicates traditional plating techniques. The guide details two principal surface preparation processes: direct electroless nickel plating and zinc immersion. This standard is essential for engineers, platers, and manufacturers seeking reliable adhesion, corrosion resistance, and functional performance in electroplated magnesium components.
Key Topics
- Surface Preparation Requirements: Conventional cleaning and activation methods for metals are unsuitable for magnesium due to its reactive surface oxide. Proper removal of contaminants like oils, greases, and oxides is critical.
- Process Options:
- Direct Electroless Nickel Plating: An efficient one-step process suitable for select applications, though some users report reduced adhesion compared to other methods.
- Zinc Immersion: Recognized for higher adhesion of subsequent plating, zinc immersion is often preferred for demanding applications.
- Step-by-Step Procedures: The guide provides explicit instructions for:
- Surface polishing, buffing, and acid pickling
- Appropriate chemical cleaning and electrocleaning tailored for magnesium
- Specialized pickling, activation, and rinsing techniques
- Application of initial conductive coatings (zinc or electroless nickel), followed by copper strike and finishing electrodeposits
- Safety and Environmental Guidance: Users are advised to implement robust safety, health, and environmental controls, with references to potential hazards of chemicals like acids and cyanides used in the processes.
Applications
ASTM B480 is widely utilized in industries where magnesium alloy components require subsequent metal plating to improve or enable:
- Corrosion Resistance: Electroplated coatings provide essential protection for magnesium parts used in highly corrosive environments.
- Solderability: Plated surfaces facilitate reliable solder joints in electronic and electrical assemblies.
- RF Grounding and Conductivity: The guide supports preparation for coatings that enhance electrical conductivity and functional grounding in aerospace and electronics.
- Hermetic Sealing: Well-prepared surfaces enable the creation of airtight, hermetic seals critical in defense, aerospace, and medical device manufacturing.
- Wear Resistance and Aesthetics: Plated finishes extend the service life and improve the appearance of magnesium components used in consumer electronics, automotive, and sporting equipment.
