ABSTRACT This specification covers round, aluminum-clad steel core wire used for mechanical reinforcement in the manufacture of aluminum conductors, aluminum-clad steel reinforced. The base metal shall be steel produced by the openhearth, electric-furnace, or basic-oxygen process and shall be of such composition that the finished clad wire shall have the properties and characteristics prescribed in this specification. The aluminum used for cladding shall have a purity and quantity sufficient to meet thickness and resistance requirements of this specification. The material shall conform to the required tensile properties such as stress, tensile strength, and elongation. The aluminum-clad steel core shall undergo elongation test, tension test, and torsion test. The elongation test shall be determined by an extensometer equipped with a vernier or other instrument reading. In the torsion test, a small tensile load shall be applied to the specimen during testing. The specimen shall be twisted by rotating one of the vises in the same direction until fracture occurs. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers round, aluminum-clad steel core wire with two designations of tensile strengths, AW2 (Normal Strength) and AW3 (High Strength). 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined. 1.2.1 For conductor sizes designated by AWG, the requirements in SI units have been numerically converted from corresponding values stated or derived in inch-pound units. For conductor sizes designated by SI units only, the requirements are stated or derived in SI units. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B502/B502M-23 is the internationally recognized standard specification for round, aluminum-clad steel core wire used in overhead electrical aluminum conductors, including aluminum-clad steel reinforced (ACSR) and related types. Developed by ASTM, this specification establishes the requirements for both normal strength (AW2) and high strength (AW3) variants of aluminum-clad steel core wire, defining their mechanical and electrical properties for dependable performance in power transmission and distribution systems.
This standard is crucial for ensuring the quality, durability, and performance consistency of aluminum-clad steel core wires, which provide essential mechanical reinforcement while maintaining electrical conductivity in high-voltage power lines.
Key Topics
Essential Aspects Covered by ASTM B502/B502M-23:
- Tensile Strength: The standard specifies two strength designations-AW2 (Normal Strength) and AW3 (High Strength)-to meet varied application requirements in electrical conductors.
- Material Composition: Base steel is produced via open-hearth, electric-furnace, or basic-oxygen processes, with aluminum cladding meeting purity and thickness specifications for electrical and mechanical reliability.
- Dimensional Tolerances: Defines permissible diameter variations and minimum aluminum cladding thickness to ensure performance and compatibility with conductor assemblies.
- Mechanical Tests: Mandates elongation and torsion tests for evaluating ductility and resistance to mechanical stresses.
- Electrical Resistance: Specifies maximum allowable resistance values and measurement methods, ensuring optimal conductor efficiency.
- Joint and Finish Requirements: Restricts joints in finished wire, prescribes welding quality, and requires smooth, defect-free surface finishes.
- Packaging and Identification: Details requirements for coil/reel marking, packaging, and shipment to protect wire integrity.
Applications
Practical Uses of Aluminum-Clad Steel Core Wire:
Aluminum-clad steel core wire manufactured to ASTM B502/B502M-23 is widely used in:
- Overhead Power Transmission Lines: As the structural core in ACSR, ACSR/TW, ACSS, and ACSS/TW conductors, offering a combination of high tensile strength and corrosion resistance.
- Electrical Distribution Systems: Used where reliability and long service life in exposure to environmental elements are critical.
- Utility Grid Modernization: Supports upgrades or new installations that require advanced conductor materials for higher capacity and efficiency in electric grids.
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers and utilities ensure that overhead electrical conductors meet industry requirements for safety, longevity, and performance, minimizing the risk of power failures and maintenance costs.
