SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 Electrodeposits of chromium on chromium are produced in cases where it is desired to obtain a better performing coating, to reclaim plated parts that are defective, or restore worn chromium coatings to original dimensions. SCOPE 1.1 This practice is intended to serve as a process guide (not as a standard procedure) for producing adherent electrodeposits of chromium on chromium for engineering use. 1.2 Only well-known, generally practical methods using hexavalent chromium plating baths have been included. Some of the newer proprietary chromium plating processes produce chromium plating for which this process is unsuitable. Suppliers of the processes should be consulted. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B630-88(2021): Standard Practice for Preparation of Chromium for Electroplating with Chromium provides a process guide for preparing chromium surfaces for further electroplating with chromium in engineering applications. Developed by ASTM International, this standard covers established, practical methods that ensure strong adhesion of chromium electrodeposits on existing chromium coatings. The practice is primarily intended for use with hexavalent chromium plating baths and does not prescribe a strict procedure, leaving room for professional judgement based on equipment, part condition, and operational requirements.
Key Topics
- Surface Preparation: Achieving optimal chromium electrodeposition starts with producing a smooth, clean, and oxide-free surface. This includes grinding, abrasive cleaning, and stripping of previous coatings if needed.
- Cleaning Procedures:
- Precleaning to remove grease and oil
- Abrasive cleaning using materials like fine emery or pumice
- Cathodic alkaline cleaning for final removal of traces of contaminants
- Masking: Use of nonconductive materials (tapes, waxes, lacquers) to protect areas where chromium should not be deposited.
- Activation: Anodic etching in a chromic acid solution to remove oxides and activate the surface, facilitating strong bonding of new chromium layers.
- Electroplating Process: Guide addresses control of voltage, temperature, and chemical bath composition, emphasizing the use of conventional hexavalent chromium solutions. Reference is made to the need for supplier consultation if proprietary baths or new plating technologies are used.
- Safety and Compliance: Users are responsible for applying appropriate safety, health, and environmental controls, and ensuring regulatory compliance during chromium electroplating preparation and processing.
Applications
ASTM B630-88(2021) is widely used in industries requiring engineering chromium coatings, such as:
- Reclaiming or repairing plated parts: Restores worn or defective chromium coatings to original dimensions, extending the lifespan of critical components.
- Enhancing coating performance: Produces multi-layer chromium electrodeposits to improve resistance to wear, corrosion, and friction.
- Industrial equipment maintenance: Supports operations in sectors like aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and heavy machinery where chromium-plated surfaces are essential for function and durability.
- Precision component finishing: Ensures dimensional accuracy and surface quality for tools, dies, hydraulic rods, and other high-performance parts.
This standard also supports quality assurance programs by providing a recognized guide for consistent surface preparation and plating results.
Related Standards
For effective implementation, ASTM B630-88(2021) should be used in conjunction with other relevant ASTM standards, including:
- ASTM B177 – Guide for Engineering Chromium Electroplating: Details procedures, controls, and process parameters for engineering-grade chromium deposits.
- Other ASTM surface preparation and testing standards: Depending on your application, refer to standards related to surface roughness, measurement, and post-plating evaluation.
For proprietary or new plating solutions, always consult supplier guidelines to confirm compatibility with preparation steps outlined in ASTM B630-88(2021).
By adopting the best practices in chromium surface preparation and electroplating as detailed in ASTM B630-88(2021), organizations can ensure consistent high-quality chromium coatings, improved component performance, and reliable, cost-effective repairs for a broad range of industrial applications.
