ABSTRACT This specification covers the establishment of requirements for lined journal bearings for use on locomotive tenders, passenger cars, and freight equipment cars. Before lining, the brass backs shall be bored and thoroughly tinned in accordance with the best standard practice. After lining, the ends of the bearings shall be made smooth by scraping, filing, or machining. The backing metal shall conform to the requirements specified for named elements for copper alloy UNS No. C94100. The lining metal shall conform to the chemical composition requirements specified for named elements. The finished bearing representing a lot for acceptance shall be broken, either longitudinally or transversely, or both, in order to ascertain the uniformity of the grain of the metal. The chemical analysis of the lining shall be made accordingly. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers the establishment of requirements for lined journal bearings for use on locomotive tenders, passenger cars, and freight equipment cars. The alloy specified is UNS No. C94100.2 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B67-14(2022), Standard Specification for Car and Tender Journal Bearings, Lined, defines the requirements for lined journal bearings used in locomotive tenders, passenger cars, and freight equipment cars. Developed under globally recognized standardization principles, this specification ensures consistency and safety in the manufacture and application of journal bearings for critical railway rolling stock components. This document is maintained by ASTM Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys, reflecting current industry best practices and performance expectations for copper alloy-lined bearings.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: The standard applies to lined journal bearings with brass backing (copper alloy UNS No. C94100) and covers their production, material composition, surface quality, testing, and marking requirements.
- Material Requirements:
- Backing: Brass backings must conform to specified chemical compositions for copper alloy UNS No. C94100.
- Lining: Lining metals are to meet defined chemical requirements for elements such as tin, antimony, arsenic, and copper.
- Manufacturing and Processing:
- Brass backs must be bored and thoroughly tinned before lining.
- After lining, ends should be finished by scraping, filing, or machining for smoothness; grinding or abrasive rubbing is not permitted.
- Uniformity and Inspection: Finished bearings are subject to fracture testing to verify uniform grain structure and freedom from separation or defects.
- Dimensions and Tolerances: Bearings must meet specific thickness and dimensional tolerances as provided by purchaser drawings.
- Product Identification: Each bearing must be clearly marked with essential information, including the manufacturer, purchaser, bearing size, pattern number, and year of casting.
- Order Requirements: Orders should specify quantity, ASTM designation, drawing references, chemical analysis (if needed), fracture tests, inspection requirements, and product marking.
Applications
ASTM B67-14(2022) is a critical standard for:
- Railway Equipment Manufacturers: Ensuring high-quality, reliable lined journal bearings in locomotive tenders, passenger cars, and freight cars.
- Aftermarket Parts Suppliers: Meeting industry benchmarks for materials and construction, supporting longevity and safety in replacement parts.
- Rail Operators and Maintenance Teams: Providing confidence that bearings meet rigorous quality standards, contributing directly to operational safety and reduced maintenance downtime.
- Purchasing and Quality Assurance Teams: Offering a clear, standardized basis for procurement, acceptance criteria, and inspection procedures.
Related Standards
For comprehensive implementation and cross-referencing, users of ASTM B67-14(2022) should be aware of these relevant standards:
- ASTM B824 - Specification for General Requirements for Copper Alloy Castings
- ASTM E255 - Practice for Sampling Copper and Copper Alloys for Determination of Chemical Composition
- ASTM E527 - Practice for Numbering Metals and Alloys in the Unified Numbering System (UNS)

Practical Value
By adhering to ASTM B67-14(2022), manufacturers and end-users benefit from:
- Standardized Quality: Assured material composition and construction methods enhance the performance and durability of journal bearings.
- Consistent Interchangeability: Uniform bearing dimensions and markings facilitate maintenance and supply chain efficiency.
- Enhanced Safety: Stringent testing and inspection minimize in-service failures and operational risks.
