ABSTRACT This specification covers GALFAN, zinc-aluminum-mischmetal (Zn-5Al-MM) alloy (UNS Z38510) in ingot form for remelting for use in the production of hot-dip coatings on steel. The alloys may be made by any approved process and shall be free from dross, slag, or other harmful contamination. The alloys shall conform to the requirements as to chemical composition prescribed for aluminum, cerium and lanthanum, iron, silicon, lead, cadmium, tin, zinc, and other elements. Sampling for chemical analysis of the alloy in standard ingot form shall be done either by drilling, sawing, or melting, and shall meet the requirements specified for selection of portion, sample preparation, and size of sample and storage. Determination of the chemical composition shall be performed by ICP argon plasma spectrometric or other methods. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry may be used for determination of cerium and lanthanum. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers GALFAN, zinc-5 % aluminum-mischmetal (Zn-5Al-MM) alloy (UNS Z38510)3 in ingot form for remelting for use in the production of hot-dip coatings on steel. Alloy composition is specified in Table 1. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to become familiar with all hazards including those identified in the appropriate Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for this product/material as provided by the manufacturer, to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices, and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B750-22 is the internationally recognized standard specification for GALFAN (Zinc-5% Aluminum-Mischmetal) Alloy in Ingot Form for Hot-Dip Coatings. Established by ASTM International, this standard outlines the requirements for supplying GALFAN alloy ingots (UNS Z38510) intended for remelting and use in the production of hot-dip protective coatings on steel products. GALFAN alloys, characterized by a controlled composition of zinc, aluminum, and mischmetal (a mixture mainly of cerium and lanthanum), offer enhanced corrosion resistance for coated steel applications. ASTM B750-22 ensures quality, consistency, and safety for manufacturers and end-users in the hot-dip galvanizing industry.
Key Topics
-
Alloy Composition Requirements: The standard specifies allowable chemical composition ranges for key elements:
- Aluminum: 4.2 to 6.2%
- Cerium and Lanthanum (combined): 0.03 to 0.10%
- Iron, Silicon, Lead, Cadmium, Tin, and other elements: strict maximum limits set to prevent contamination and intergranular corrosion
- Zinc makes up the remainder of the alloy
-
Quality and Purity: All ingots must be free from dross, slag, or any other harmful contamination to ensure high-quality hot-dip coatings.
-
Material Production and Testing: The alloy can be manufactured by any approved process, with chemical conformity proven through standard analytical techniques, notably:
- Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) argon plasma spectrometry
- X-ray fluorescence for determining rare-earth components
- Sampling methods as specified to ensure representative analysis
-
Ordering and Certification: Purchasers must follow the ordering guidelines set out in ASTM B949, ensuring that all specifications are clearly defined and the supplied material meets standard requirements. Provisions for certification, inspection, rejection, and rehearing are referenced for compliance and quality assurance.
Applications
-
Hot-Dip Galvanizing Industry: GALFAN alloy ingots conforming to ASTM B750-22 are primarily remelted to produce molten baths for hot-dip coating of steel. This process imparts a tightly adherent, highly corrosion-resistant metallic layer, extending steel's service life in harsh environments.
-
Construction and Infrastructure: Hot-dip GALFAN-coated steel is widely used in construction, infrastructure, and utility sectors, including guardrails, structural steelwork, wire products, fencing, and fasteners, where enhanced durability and minimized maintenance are critical.
-
Automotive and Energy Sectors: The advanced protection offered by GALFAN-coated steels also benefits automobile parts, power transmission lines, and renewable energy installations.
-
Global Manufacturing Standards: Adoption of ASTM B750-22 ensures compatibility and quality for international trade and manufacturing, as it aligns with globally recognized testing and product conformity protocols.
