ABSTRACT This specification covers round, zinc-aluminum mischmetal (Zn-5Al-MM) alloy-coated, steel core wire with three classes of this coating used for mechanical reinforcement in the manufacture of aluminum conductors, steel reinforced. The base metal shall be steel produced by the open-hearth, electric furnace, or basic oxygen process. The steel shall conform to the required chemical composition carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon. The coated steel core wire shall conform to the required tensile and elongation properties. The wire shall be capable of being wrapped in a close helix around a cylindrical mandrel. For the purpose of calculating mass per unit length, cross sections, etc, the density of the material shall be taken. Wire diamter, mass and permissible variations shall be measured. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers round, zinc–5 % aluminum-mischmetal (Zn–5Al–MM) alloy-coated, steel core wire with three classes of Zn–5Al–MM coating for use in overhead electrical conductors. 1.2 This specification covers wire of diameter from 0.0500 in. to 0.1900 in. or 1.27 mm to 4.82 mm, inclusive. 1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B802/B802M-23, issued by ASTM International, specifies requirements for round, zinc–5% aluminum-mischmetal (Zn–5Al–MM) alloy-coated steel core wire used in overhead electrical conductors. This standard ensures the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance needed for steel-reinforced aluminum conductors. Covering a range of diameters from 0.0500 in. to 0.1900 in. (1.27 mm to 4.82 mm), it establishes consistent manufacturing and testing criteria for wire produced via open-hearth, electric furnace, or basic oxygen steelmaking processes. Compliance with this standard assures quality, uniformity, and reliability for applications demanding robust electrical performance and mechanical integrity.
Key Topics
- Material Requirements: Specifies the chemical composition for base steel (carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon) to ensure desired mechanical properties.
- Coating Specification: Details three classes of Zn–5Al–MM alloy coatings for enhanced corrosion resistance and longevity, with precise area density and thickness requirements for each class.
- Mechanical Properties: Establishes minimum tensile strength, elongation, and stress at 1% extension for various wire diameters, ensuring strength and flexibility suitable for overhead conductors.
- Testing and Inspection:
- Tensile Test: Verifies conformance to strength and elongation specifications.
- Wrap Test: Ensures ductility-wires must wrap around a mandrel without fracturing.
- Coating Adherence: Assesses the bond between the alloy coating and the steel core.
- Dimensional Tolerances: Sets permissible variations in wire diameter, supporting consistent fit and function.
- Manufacturing Practices: Describes acceptable production methods, allowable joints, and finish standards for the coated steel wire.
- Order and Marking: Outlines details required in purchase orders, as well as packaging and labeling instructions to facilitate traceability and installation.
Applications
- Overhead Electrical Conductors: The primary application is as steel core wire in aluminum conductors, where it serves as the mechanical reinforcement for conductors used in overhead power transmission and distribution lines.
- Power Industry: Enables construction of high-reliability, long-span transmission cables resistant to corrosion and mechanical stress.
- Infrastructure Projects: Used in urban and rural grid expansions, network upgrades, or new installations owing to superior corrosion protection from the Zn–5Al–MM alloy coating.
- Extreme Environments: Effective in coastal, industrial, and other harsh environments where traditional galvanizing may be insufficient.
By specifying requirements for both mechanical and chemical properties, the standard promotes enhanced service life, reduced maintenance, and improved safety for critical electrical infrastructure.
