ABSTRACT This specification covers the requirements for UNS C95300, C95400, C95410, C95500, C95800, C87500, C87800, C87850, and C89540 copper alloy permanent mold castings for general applications. UNS C95800 copper alloy used in sea water applications should be heat treated for better corrosion resistance. In general, alloys included in this specification are weldable. Mechanical properties like the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation are determined from separately cast test bar castings and should conform to the specified requirements. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers requirements for copper alloy2 permanent mold castings for general applications. Nominal compositions of the alloys under this specification are shown in Table 1. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B806-23: Standard Specification for Copper Alloy Permanent Mold Castings for General Applications establishes requirements for the chemical composition, mechanical properties, and manufacturing process of permanent mold castings made from specific copper alloys, ensuring reliable quality and performance for general engineering purposes. Developed by ASTM International, this standard covers a range of copper alloys including UNS C95300, C95400, C95410, C95500, C95800, C87500, C87800, C87850, and C89540, widely used for their strength, corrosion resistance, and machinability.
Permanent mold casting is a proven method for producing high-quality metal components with repeatable properties. ASTM B806-23 supports manufacturers, purchasers, and engineers in specifying, procuring, and verifying copper alloy products for demanding applications.
Key Topics
- Copper Alloy Grades: Specifies detailed composition and requirements for alloys such as aluminum bronze, silicon brass, nickel aluminum bronze, and lead-free brasses.
- Mechanical Properties: Covers minimum requirements for tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation, established through standard test procedures.
- Heat Treatment: Recommends temper anneal heat treatment for UNS C95800 alloy in seawater service to enhance corrosion resistance.
- Manufacturing and Quality: Includes guidelines on sampling, certification, casting repairs, and compliance with soundness and inspection criteria.
- Ordering Information: Outlines what must be included in a purchase order, such as alloy type (UNS number), quantities, required tests, and specific quality clauses.
- Measurement Units: Provides values primarily in inch-pound units with SI equivalents for informational reference.
Applications
Castings produced under ASTM B806-23 are integral to multiple industries due to copper alloys’ superior properties, such as durability and resistance to mechanical and chemical stress. Common applications include:
- Marine Components: Propellers, valve bodies, and fittings, particularly where corrosion resistance is critical, such as with C95800 in seawater environments.
- Industrial Machinery: Bearings, gears, and bushings that require high strength and wear resistance.
- General Engineering: Pump components, fixtures, and architectural hardware, benefiting from the consistent mechanical properties and machinability provided by permanent mold casting.
- Plumbing and Fluid Handling: Use in systems that demand resistance to corrosion, especially where potable water or aggressive fluids are present.
This standard ensures that copper alloy castings meet international quality and performance benchmarks, facilitating global commerce and interoperability.
Related Standards
Several referenced and related ASTM standards support the consistent application and testing of copper alloy permanent mold castings:
- ASTM B208: Guides the preparation of tension test specimens for copper alloy castings, ensuring valid mechanical property testing.
- ASTM B824: Sets general requirements for copper alloy castings, covering aspects like pressure and soundness testing, marking, and certification.
- ASTM E527: Defines the Unified Numbering System (UNS) for identifying metals and alloys, allowing clear communication and traceability.
By adhering to ASTM B806-23, manufacturers and users gain confidence in the quality and suitability of copper alloy permanent mold castings, supporting reliable performance in critical applications worldwide.
