ABSTRACT This specification covers stainless steel powder metallurgy (PM) structural components with minimum densities that are fabricated from prealloyed powder consisting primarily of iron, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and boron2 and are intended for use in corrosive service. Structural components shall be made by cold pressing and sintering prealloyed powder. The chemical composition; physical properties such as density; and mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation and hardness; are detailed. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers stainless steel powder metallurgy (PM) structural components with a 7.7-g/cm3 minimum density that are fabricated from prealloyed powder consisting primarily of iron, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and boron2 and are intended for use in corrosive service. 1.2 With the exception of the values for density and the mass used to determine density, for which the use of the gram per cubic centimetre (g/cm3) and gram (g) units is the longstanding industry practice, the values in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B853-16(2021)e1: Standard Specification for Powder Metallurgy (PM) Boron Stainless Steel Structural Components defines the requirements for stainless steel structural components produced by powder metallurgy processes. Developed by ASTM International, this standard specifically targets PM components fabricated from prealloyed powders mainly composed of iron, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and boron. These components are specially designed for use in corrosive environments, offering enhanced durability and strength. The standard covers critical specifications such as minimum density, chemical composition, physical and mechanical properties, and the appropriate testing methods to ensure reliable performance for end users.
Key Topics
-
Material Composition:
- Prealloyed powder consisting primarily of iron, chromium (22.0-24.0%), nickel (17.0-19.0%), molybdenum (3.0-4.0%), and boron (0.20-0.50%)
- Strict limits on impurities like carbon (0.05% max), manganese (2.00% max), phosphorus (0.03% max), sulfur (0.03% max), silicon (1.0% max), and nitrogen (0.10% max)
- Chemical analysis methods referenced: ASTM E354, E572, E1019, and E1086
-
Physical Properties:
- Sintered density requirement: minimum 7.7 g/cm³
- Density measurement in accordance with ASTM B311
-
Mechanical Properties:
- Typical mechanical performance: 0.2% offset yield strength of 33,000 psi (228 MPa), ultimate tensile strength of 76,000 psi (520 MPa), elongation of 23%, and hardness of 75 HRB
- Mechanical testing protocols and quality control agreed upon by producer and purchaser
-
Manufacturing Process:
- Components produced by cold pressing and sintering of prealloyed powder mixtures
- Sintering temperature adjusted according to powder chemistry for optimal properties
-
Quality Assurance & Compliance:
- Requirements for certification, inspection, and chemical analysis upon purchaser’s request
- Supplementary corrosion tests (intergranular, pitting, and salt spray) available as specified
Applications
ASTM B853-16(2021)e1 applies to industries and manufacturers utilizing stainless steel PM structural components for their superior corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. Typical application areas include:
- Automotive components: Gears, brackets, and fittings exposed to harsh chemicals or moisture
- Chemical processing: Equipment parts subject to corrosive conditions
- Marine environments: Structural components requiring resistance to saltwater and atmospheric corrosion
- Food processing and medical devices: Situations where hygiene and corrosion resistance are critical
The specification ensures that PM structural components meet stringent quality criteria, leading to reliable performance, extended service life, and predictable properties in corrosive service environments.
