SCOPE 1.1 This standard covers terminology relating to gypsum and related building materials and systems. The terms are generically defined. More specific and expanded definitions may appear in appropriate standards. 1.2 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C11-23: Standard Terminology Relating to Gypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems is an internationally recognized standard developed by ASTM International. This terminology standard provides generic definitions for terms commonly used in the field of gypsum and related building materials, including gypsum board, plaster, joint compounds, and panel products. Developed in accordance with the World Trade Organization’s Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) principles, ASTM C11-23 aims to promote consistency and clarity in the use of terminology across the construction industry.
This standard supports effective communication among manufacturers, specifiers, designers, builders, regulators, and other stakeholders involved in the production and application of gypsum-based building solutions. It serves as a foundational reference for understanding terms that appear throughout related ASTM standards.
Key Topics
ASTM C11-23 covers essential terminology relevant to gypsum and its applications, including:
- Gypsum Products: Definitions for gypsum board, wallboard, lath, sheathing, casting plaster, neat plaster, veneer plaster, and gypsum concrete.
- Plaster and Coatings: Terms for base coats, finish coats, scratch coats, brown coats, and various types of plaster (such as ready-mixed, mold-resistant, and wood-fibered).
- Construction Accessories: Explanations for cornerbeads, edge trims, joint tapes, embedding and finishing compounds, and adhesives.
- Material Properties: Definitions for density, compressive strength, flexural strength, water vapor transmission, fire-resistance classification, flame spread classification, and water absorption.
- Installation and Assembly: Insight into control joints, construction joints, bridging, framing members, and methods such as three-coat work.
- Special Features: Definitions for fire-resistant “type X” gypsum panels, mold-resistant gypsum, glass mat facers, and synthetic gypsum.
The standard also incorporates terms withdrawn from use or defined more specifically in application-focused ASTM documents, offering historical context when relevant.
Applications
ASTM C11-23 is widely applied across the following sectors:
- Building Construction: Establishing standard vocabulary for professionals involved in the design and installation of gypsum-based assemblies for walls, ceilings, sheathing, and specialty products.
- Material Manufacturing: Assisting manufacturers in labeling, product literature, compliance documentation, and quality assurance based on uniform definitions.
- Product Testing and Performance Specifications: Supporting test procedures, such as those for fire-resistance or water absorption, by providing consistent terminology across testing standards.
- Specification Development: A critical foundation for architects, engineers, and specifiers developing project requirements or referencing multiple ASTM standards.
- Code Compliance and Regulatory Review: Facilitating clear communication for building inspectors and code officials assessing adherence to building regulations using recognized terminology.
By ensuring all project parties use standardized language, ASTM C11-23 helps minimize misunderstandings and promotes best practices in the specification and use of gypsum products.
Related Standards
ASTM C11-23’s terminology is referenced by and supports many other standards in the gypsum and construction materials industry, including:
- ASTM C22/C22M - Specification for Gypsum
- ASTM C28/C28M - Specification for Gypsum Plasters
- ASTM C59/C59M - Specification for Gypsum Casting and Molding Plasters
- ASTM C317/C317M - Specification for Gypsum Concrete
