ABSTRACT This specification covers the requirements for concrete grid paving units proposed for use in vehicular trafficways, parking areas, soil stabilization, and revetments. Materials shall possess adequate durability for the intended use. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers the requirements for concrete grid paving units for vehicular trafficways, parking areas, soil stabilization, and revetments. Note 1: When particular features are desired, such as weight classification, higher compressive strength, surface texture, finish, color, or other special features, such properties should be specified separately by the purchaser. However, local sellers should be consulted as to availability of units having the desired features. 1.2 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C1319-23a: Standard Specification for Concrete Grid Paving Units sets out the requirements for concrete grid paving units designed for use in vehicular trafficways, parking areas, soil stabilization, and revetments. This ASTM standard provides guidelines on materials, durability, dimensional tolerances, and quality assurance testing for concrete grid pavers, ensuring reliable performance in a variety of infrastructural and landscaping applications. Products made to this specification offer consistent quality and long-term performance, making them ideal for both heavy-duty and environmentally sensitive projects.
Key Topics
- Material Requirements: The standard details the types and specifications for cementitious materials, aggregates, and admixtures used in manufacturing concrete grid paving units. Products must comply with relevant ASTM references for:
- Portland cements (ASTM C150/C150M)
- Blended hydraulic cements (ASTM C595/C595M)
- Pozzolans (ASTM C618)
- Slag cements (ASTM C989/C989M)
- Pigments for colored concrete (ASTM C979/C979M)
- Conforming aggregates (ASTM C33/C33M, C331/C331M), with flexibility in grading for production needs
- Physical Properties: Essential performance criteria include:
- Durability suitable for intended use
- Maximum unit size of 24 x 24 inches (610 x 610 mm)
- Minimum thickness specified at 3 1/8 inches (80 mm)
- Requirements for compressive strength, water absorption, and structural integrity
- Dimensional Tolerances: Acceptable variation in size and shape ensures units can be reliably installed and perform as designed.
- Testing and Compliance: Sampling and quality control procedures must follow ASTM C140/C140M, ensuring that all units meet prescribed physical criteria before acceptance.
Applications
Concrete grid paving units manufactured to ASTM C1319-23a are widely used in urban and civil infrastructure projects, especially where durability and environmental performance are critical. Common applications include:
- Vehicular Trafficways: Roads, driveways, and emergency access lanes where load-bearing and drainage are essential.
- Parking Areas: Sustainable parking surfaces allowing infiltration of stormwater, reducing runoff and promoting groundwater recharge.
- Soil Stabilization: Erosion control on slopes or embankments by reinforcing soil and allowing for vegetation growth through the open grid structure.
- Revetments: Shoreline and channel protection, utilizing grid pavers for energy dissipation, soil retention, and environmental restoration.
- Green Infrastructure: Projects requiring pervious or semi-pervious surfaces to comply with local and national stormwater management regulations.
ASTM C1319-23a supports sustainable landscaping, low impact development (LID), and green building initiatives by specifying reliable criteria for high-quality, permeable paving solutions.
Related Standards
Concrete grid paving units often interface with other materials and products that are governed by additional standards. Closely related ASTM standards include:
- ASTM C33/C33M: Specification for Concrete Aggregates
- ASTM C140/C140M: Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Concrete Masonry Units and Related Units
- ASTM C150/C150M: Specification for Portland Cement
- ASTM C595/C595M: Specification for Blended Hydraulic Cements
- ASTM C618: Specification for Coal Fly Ash and Raw or Calcined Natural Pozzolan
- ASTM C979/C979M: Specification for Pigments for Integrally Colored Concrete
- ASTM C989/C989M: Specification for Slag Cement
- ASTM C1240: Specification for Silica Fume Used in Cementitious Mixtures
Adherence to ASTM C1319-23a, combined with these related standards, ensures superior quality, safety, and performance for concrete grid paving solutions in infrastructure and environmental projects.
