SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This test method is intended to provide information from which applicable design data can be determined for a given anchor used to support a dimension stone panel. The strength of a limited length of anchor may be related to a longer length of support when the flexibility of the support is properly considered by the designer. Refer to Guide C1242. SCOPE 1.1 This test method provides procedures for determining the ultimate strength of an assembly consisting of stone with mechanical anchor (anchorage). Load is applied, separately, perpendicular to the surface of the panel and parallel to the surface of the panel. This test is intended to represent the interaction of the anchor with the stone panel. However, influence of the backup structure on the strength of the assemblies is not included. 1.2 This test method is applicable to stone panels supported by mechanical anchors. 1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C1354/C1354M-22 is the internationally recognized standard for testing the strength of individual stone anchorages in dimension stone panels. Developed by ASTM International, this test method provides uniform procedures to determine the ultimate load-bearing capacity of stone panels affixed with mechanical anchors. The method is specifically designed to assess the performance of an assembly-comprising a stone panel and its anchor-when subjected to loads applied either perpendicular or parallel to the panel surface. By simulating real-life load conditions, this standard ensures the safety and reliability of dimension stone construction in architectural and structural applications.
Key Topics
- Test Specimen Preparation: The standard outlines specific requirements for fabricating test assemblies using stone panels and anchors that reflect actual construction conditions.
- Load Application: Procedures are detailed for the separate application of loads perpendicular and parallel to the panel surface, simulating realistic stresses that stone anchorages would encounter in service.
- Failure Observation: The method requires careful documentation of both the load at failure and the mode of failure for each test specimen.
- Units of Measurement: Test results can be reported in SI units or inch-pound units, but mixing systems is not permitted within a single application to ensure conformity.
- Reporting Requirements: Detailed documentation of testing, including the description of specimens, testing procedures, results, and deviations from standard practices, is mandated for transparency and repeatability.
- Suitability and Limitations: The method does not assess the influence of backup structures or address all potential safety concerns; users are responsible for appropriate risk assessments and adherence to local regulatory requirements.
Applications
ASTM C1354/C1354M-22 is widely used in a variety of practical scenarios within the building and construction industry:
- Design Validation: Engineers and architects use the test data to validate or refine the design of mechanical anchorages for dimension stone façades, ensuring systems can safely bear expected loads.
- Quality Assurance: Stone suppliers and contractors employ this standard to demonstrate the suitability and durability of their anchorage systems before installation.
- Code Compliance: Building officials and project consultants reference this standard to confirm that installations meet safety regulations and industry best practices.
- Product Development: Manufacturers of anchors and stone attachment systems rely on the results obtained from this method for product testing and certification.
- Failure Analysis: The test provides insights that can be used to investigate the causes of anchorage or panel failures in the field.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive evaluation and installation of dimension stone anchorage systems, ASTM C1354/C1354M-22 is often used in conjunction with the following associated standards:
- ASTM C1242: Guide for Selection, Design, and Installation of Dimension Stone Attachment Systems
- ASTM C1799: Guide to Dimension Stone Test Specimen Sampling and Preparation
- ASTM E4: Practices for Force Calibration and Verification of Testing Machines
