ABSTRACT This specification covers molded glass fiber reinforced gypsum (GRG) parts, which are nonload-bearing, thin-shell, ornamental shapes for architectural embellishment of interior building construction. GRG parts shall be produced using the same materials used to make the composites in conformance with the referenced specification. GRG parts shall be manufactured from the mixed slurry or alpha gypsum cement, potable water and additives, and glass fiber reinforcement using either the hand lay-up or the spray-up process in a mold. GRG parts shall be produced according to approved shop drawings. Shop drawings shall specify part dimensions, quantities, recommended attachment points and methods, reinforcements, embedments, and tolerance. The material shall conform to the required mechanical properties and to the specified dimensions and tolerances of GRG parts. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers molded glass fiber reinforced gypsum (GRG) parts, which are nonload-bearing, thin-shell, ornamental shapes for architectural embellishment of interior building construction. 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.3 The information presented refers to the molded surface of the part. 1.4 The text of this standard references footnotes, which provide explanatory material. These footnotes shall not be considered as requirements of the standard. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C1381/C1381M-23, Standard Specification for Molded Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (GRG) Parts, provides clear requirements and quality benchmarks for the production of nonload-bearing, thin-shell, ornamental GRG shapes used in architectural embellishment for interior building construction. This specification ensures that GRG components are consistently manufactured using appropriate materials and processes, and that they meet defined standards for appearance, mechanical properties, and dimensional accuracy.
The standard is maintained by ASTM Committee C11 on Gypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems and is recognized for aligning with internationally accepted practices per WTO TBT Committee guidelines.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Covers only non-load-bearing, molded GRG parts for interior architectural ornamentation.
- Materials: GRG parts must be produced from a composite mixture of gypsum cement (either alpha or beta), potable water, additives, and glass fiber reinforcement, utilizing either hand lay-up or spray-up methods.
- Manufacturing Process:
- Production in molds as per approved shop drawings.
- Shop drawings must detail part dimensions, quantities, attachment points/methods, reinforcements, and tolerances.
- Dimensional and Surface Requirements:
- Minimum thickness requirements for parts and reinforced areas.
- Strict tolerances for straightness, overall dimensions, and part thickness.
- Molded surfaces should be suitable to receive flat paint, with additional finishing as needed for high-sheen conditions.
- Quality and Inspection:
- Each GRG manufacturer must provide certification of compliance with material and process specifications.
- Mock-ups and samples for inspection/testing must be supplied when specified.
- Rejection procedures, reporting protocols, and packaging standards are outlined to ensure delivery of undamaged products.
Applications
Molded Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (GRG) Parts are extensively used by architects, designers, and builders for enhancing the interiors of commercial, institutional, and residential projects. Common applications include:
- Ornamental ceilings and domes
- Cornices, columns, and pilasters
- Decorative wall panels and moldings
- Custom interior features in theaters, hotels, and public buildings
Utilizing GRG components manufactured in accordance with ASTM C1381/C1381M-23 ensures uniform quality, reliable performance, and seamless integration into architectural designs. Compliance with this standard is often required for public and large-scale private projects demanding high-quality interior decorative elements.
Related Standards
