ABSTRACT This specification covers the standard for bent glass proposed for use in general building construction, furniture, display, and various other non-automotive applications. When the glass is specified as chemically strengthened, heat-strengthened, or fully tempered, the fabrication processes must be completed prior to the strengthening. The glass specimen shall also undergo impact testing for safety glazing. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers the requirements for bent glass used in general building construction, furniture, display, and various other non-automotive applications. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses after SI units are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 8, of this specification. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C1464-21: Standard Specification for Bent Glass establishes recognized requirements for bent glass products used in general building construction, furniture, display, and a broad range of non-automotive applications. Developed by ASTM International, this standard covers terminology, material classification, fabrication requirements, tolerances, and test methods relevant to the production and quality assurance of bent glass. It ensures that bent glass used for architectural and design purposes meets consistent quality and safety standards.
Key Topics
- Scope: The specification applies to bent glass in architectural, furniture, and display settings, but excludes automotive uses.
- Glass Types: Defines multiple categories, including:
- Annealed bent glass
- Chemically strengthened bent glass
- Fully tempered bent glass
- Heat-strengthened bent glass
- Laminated bent glass
- Miscellaneous combinations
- Fabrication: All finishing processes, such as cutting and drilling, must occur before any chemical or thermal strengthening.
- Tolerances: Dimensional tolerances for height, girth, shape accuracy, cross-bend, and twist are provided to ensure precise manufacturing and fit.
- Visual and Physical Inspection: Includes requirements for maximum allowable blemishes, visual inspection distances, and specific evaluation criteria.
- Safety Glazing: Guidelines for impact testing and marking to comply with federal, ANSI, and building code safety regulations.
- Optical Quality: Discussion of surface distortion and anisotropy inherent to certain strengthening processes.
Applications
ASTM C1464-21 is crucial for architects, glass fabricators, contractors, and manufacturers specifying bent glass in building and interior environments. Its applications include:
- Building Construction: Curved glass walls, atriums, stairs, canopies, and balustrades.
- Furniture: Custom glass tables, cabinetry, or shelving featuring bent glass.
- Displays: Retail showcases, exhibit installations, and artistic architectural features.
- Non-Automotive Safety Glazing: Where impact resistance or compliance with safety glazing standards is required.
- Interior Design: Partitions, railing infill, and unique decorative installations making use of complex glass shapes.
In all cases, users should coordinate with fabricators to confirm feasibility, particularly for unusual or customized bend configurations.
