SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 This classification establishes an orderly grouping of insulating firebrick to provide group identifications for use by those producing or purchasing these materials. The group identification number is not meant to specifically designate the maximum service temperature, although the number times 100 does approximate the temperature (in degrees Fahrenheit) to be used to check the reheat change and can be used as a guide for relative temperature stability. The bulk density limits the weight per unit volume for any group as sold, but is not meant to be used for detailed engineering calculations. SCOPE 1.1 This classification covers heat-insulating material known as insulating firebrick. This material is suitable for lining certain kinds of industrial furnaces. Note 1: Insulating materials for use below 1000 °F (538 °C) are covered2 by ASTM Committee C16 on Thermal Insulation. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C155-97(2022) - Standard Classification of Insulating Firebrick provides a systematic approach to categorizing heat-insulating materials, specifically insulating firebrick, which are widely used as lining in industrial furnaces. Developed by ASTM International, this classification assists both manufacturers and purchasers in identifying the appropriate group of insulating firebrick based on properties like bulk density and resistance to reheat changes.
The standard enables the orderly grouping of insulating firebrick without prescribing maximum service temperatures but offers a systematic guide for temperature stability. This ensures that users select the most suitable material for high-temperature applications, supporting reliability and efficiency across industrial settings.
Key Topics
- Group Identification: Insulating firebrick are classified by group numbers. While the group number times 100 approximates the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit for reheat change testing, it serves only as a relative indicator of thermal stability.
- Bulk Density: Each group has defined bulk density limits, which specify the maximum weight per unit volume but are not intended for use in detailed engineering calculations.
- Test Methods: The classification requires determination of:
- Bulk Density using ASTM C134
- Reheat Change using ASTM C210
- Reheat Change: The standard assesses the percent reheat change of brick at specific temperatures, serving as an indicator of their thermal stability during industrial operations.
- Units and Values: Standards are provided in inch-pound units, with SI conversions provided for reference only.
Applications
Insulating firebrick classified under ASTM C155-97(2022) are essential in numerous high-temperature industrial processes. Their primary applications include:
- Furnace Lining: Insulating firebrick are frequently used for lining industrial furnaces, kilns, incinerators, and similar equipment where heat containment and insulation are critical.
- Thermal Insulation: These materials help reduce heat loss, enhance energy efficiency, and protect structural integrity in extreme environments.
- Material Procurement: Manufacturers and buyers use this standard to specify the right grade of firebrick, ensuring materials meet the necessary performance criteria for specific operations.
- Quality Control: Group classification aids quality assurance processes by providing a basis for comparing products and verifying conformity to customer and industry requirements.
This classification is not intended for insulating materials operating below 1000 °F (538 °C), which are addressed by other ASTM standards.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive evaluation and selection of insulating firebrick, reference the following related ASTM standards:
- ASTM C134: Test Methods for Size, Dimensional Measurements, and Bulk Density of Refractory Brick and Insulating Firebrick
- ASTM C210: Test Method for Reheat Change of Insulating Firebrick
- ASTM Committee C16: Standards for thermal insulation materials used at temperatures below 1000 °F (538 °C)
These standards provide procedures and requirements for testing, quality control, and material performance assessment, supporting consistent application of ASTM C155-97(2022) across industrial sectors.
