ABSTRACT This specification establishes the physical and performance requirements, and the corresponding test methods, for the evaluation of reflective insulation systems that are applied externally to rigid ducts in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems operating at specified temperatures. The products covered here are classified into five types according to the substrate material used, namely: Type A, product with polyethylene foam substrate; Type B, product with polyethylene bubble pack substrate; Type C, product with fiberglass substrate; Type D, product with polyester fiber substrate; and Type E, product with kraft paper substrate. Properly sampled specimens shall undergo test procedure to examine their conformance with the following requirements: emittance; water vapor permeance; surface burning characteristics; aging resistance; adhesive performance (bleeding and delamination); pliability; fungi resistance; thermal resistance; and hot-surface performance. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers the requirements and physical properties of reflective insulation systems applied externally to Rigid Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) duct systems operating at or below 250°F (121.1°C). These insulation systems consist of one or more low-emittance surfaces, such as metallic foil or metallic deposits, mounted on substrates to produce reflective air spaces. Reflective insulation systems derive thermal performance from surfaces with an emittance of no greater than 0.1 facing enclosed air spaces. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C1668-24 is the standard specification developed by ASTM International for externally applied reflective insulation systems on rigid ductwork in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This standard establishes the physical and performance requirements for reflective insulation products installed on HVAC ducts operating at or below 250°F (121.1°C). The specification addresses systems that utilize one or more low-emittance surfaces, such as metallic foil, to enhance thermal performance through the creation of reflective air spaces.
This standard is critical in ensuring consistent product quality, safety, and energy efficiency in HVAC duct insulation applications. It categorizes reflective insulation systems by substrate type, defines physical performance requirements, and specifies test methods for product evaluation.
Key Topics
-
Product Classification: Reflective insulation systems are categorized into five types based on substrate material:
- Type A: Polyethylene foam substrate
- Type B: Polyethylene bubble pack substrate
- Type C: Fiberglass substrate
- Type D: Polyester fiber substrate
- Type E: Kraft paper substrate
-
Performance Criteria: Reflective insulation systems must meet specific requirements, including:
- Maximum surface emittance of 0.1
- Water vapor permeance of 0.02 perms or less
- Surface burning characteristics (maximum flame spread index of 25, smoke developed index of 50)
- Aging resistance, adhesive performance (no bleeding or delamination), and fungi resistance
- Pliability to prevent cracking or delamination during handling and installation
- Minimum hot-surface performance at 250°F (121.1°C)
- Maintenance of thermal resistance (R-value)
-
Marking and Packaging: Detailed requirements ensure proper labeling of insulation systems, including R-values, manufacturer identification, and performance characteristics for correct selection and regulatory compliance.
-
Test Methods and Inspection: Utilization of industry-recognized ASTM testing protocols for properties such as emittance, thermal resistance, water vapor permeance, surface burning, and flexibility ensures material quality and safety.
Applications
Reflective insulation systems compliant with ASTM C1668-24 are widely used in:
- Commercial, industrial, and residential HVAC ducting: Suitable for both new construction and retrofit projects, enhancing energy efficiency by reducing heat gain or loss in supply and return ducts.
- Air distribution systems: Externally applied insulation is critical for maintaining desired indoor temperatures and minimizing energy consumption in buildings.
- Moisture and thermal control: Low water vapor permeance and fungi resistance make these systems ideal for ducts in humid environments or areas prone to condensation.
These insulation systems help building owners, facility managers, and HVAC contractors achieve high-performance air systems that comply with energy codes and improve indoor comfort.
