ABSTRACT This specification establishes the requirements for steel fiber reinforced concrete pipe (SFRCP) of internal diameters 12-48 in., to be used in the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, and storm water as well as the construction of culverts. Pipe furnished under this specification shall be designated as Class I, II, III, IV, or V. The standard covers the basis of acceptance of the pipe design, design and manufacturing, materials and manufacture, proof of design testing, physical requirements, compression tests for determining th compressive strength of steel fiber concrete, dimensions and permissible variations, repairs, inspection and rejection, disposition of a rejected lot, certification, and product marking. Definitions of terms relating to concrete pipe are provided, including D-load, the load the pipe is required to support in the three-edge bearing test. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers steel fiber reinforced concrete pipe (SFRCP) intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, and storm water and for the construction of culverts. Note 1: Experience has shown that the successful performance of this product depends upon the proper selection of the pipe strength, the type of bedding and backfill, the care that the installation conforms to the construction specifications, and provision for adequate inspection at the construction site. This specification does not include requirements for bedding, backfill, the relation ship between field load conditions and the strength designation of pipe, or durability under unusual environmental conditions. These requirements should be included in the project specification. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C1765-24 is the standard specification for Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete Pipe (SFRCP), covering culvert, storm drain, and sewer pipe with internal diameters ranging from 12 to 48 inches. Developed by ASTM International, this specification defines the manufacturing, materials, design, physical requirements, quality control, testing, and marking criteria for SFRCP intended for the conveyance of sewage, industrial waste, and stormwater, as well as culvert construction. The standard ensures that steel fiber reinforcement is integrated into concrete pipe for enhanced structural performance.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application:
- Specifies SFRCP for sewage, stormwater, and industrial waste conveyance, and for use as culvert pipe.
- Applicable to diameters between 12 and 48 inches and classes I-V, each with defined strength requirements.
-
Material Requirements:
- Cementitious materials must comply with relevant ASTM standards, including portland cement, blended hydraulic cements, fly ash, and slag cement.
- Steel fibers are required to meet ASTM A820/A820M.
- Aggregates, admixtures, and water must comply with specific ASTM specifications to ensure durability and consistency.
-
Design and Manufacturing:
- Pipe classes I-V, each with prescribed service and test load ratings.
- Design criteria include wall thickness, compressive strength, reinforcement type, and joint design for smooth flow and structural integrity.
- Emphasizes proper mixing and distribution of steel fibers throughout the concrete matrix.
-
Performance Testing and Quality Assurance:
- Proof of design through load testing per ASTM C497, including three-edge bearing strength tests.
- Compression tests for concrete using cylinders or cores, with established acceptance criteria and retest provisions.
- Dimensional tolerances for diameter, wall thickness, and length ensure uniform installation and performance.
-
Acceptance, Inspection, and Marking:
- Pipes are inspected for physical defects and must meet all requirements for acceptance.
- Each pipe must be distinctly marked with specification details for traceability.
Applications
Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete Pipe (SFRCP) offers enhanced load-bearing capacity and crack resistance, making it ideal for:
- Municipal and industrial sewer systems
- Stormwater drainage networks
- Bridge and roadway culverts
- Infrastructure requiring high durability against internal and external service loads
Adopting ASTM C1765-24 helps engineers, contractors, and specifiers ensure project compliance, improve long-term durability, and reduce maintenance through reliable performance standards for reinforced concrete pipes.
Related Standards
ASTM C1765-24 cites several key supporting standards to ensure comprehensive compliance and material quality, including:
