SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 The test method within this standard is used to demonstrate uranium ore-concentrate material meets the moisture specification defined in Specification C967 or other applicable requirements. SCOPE 1.1 This test method is used to determine compliance with Specification C967 for the requirements of moisture in uranium ore concentrates (UOC). A procedure is given to determine the approximate temperature for drying the UOC; normally 110 °C but possibly 165 °C for uranyl peroxides. The dried uranium ore-concentrate resulting from this procedure is then used for performing additional analyses described in Specification C967. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical equivalents that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C1843-16(2022), Standard Test Method for Determining Moisture Content in Uranium-Ore Concentrate, is an internationally recognized test standard published by ASTM International. The method defines a process for verifying that uranium ore concentrate (UOC) materials meet specified moisture requirements, as stipulated in ASTM C967 or other applicable regulations. Accurate determination of moisture content is critical for safety, quality assurance, and compliance in the nuclear fuel cycle, impacting further analytical processes, storage, transportation, and use of uranium ore concentrate.
Key Topics
- Moisture Content Assessment: Establishes a laboratory-based protocol to determine the moisture level in UOC, ensuring compliance with specification requirements.
- Drying Procedures: Outlines the process for drying UOC samples at designated temperatures, typically 110 °C, but up to 165 °C for uranyl peroxide-containing samples.
- Sample Preparation and Handling:
- Pulverization and blending to achieve sample uniformity
- Use of laboratory sieves to standardize sample particle size distribution
- Precautions for sample integrity and reproducibility
- Weighing and Calculation: Directions for accurate weighing before and after drying, using precise balances and desiccators to ensure reliable results.
- Safety and Precautions: Guidance on measures to prevent inhalation or ingestion of uranium-ore concentrate, including the use of lab hoods, dust collection, and personal protective equipment.
- Vacuum Sealing and Packaging: Procedures for proper sample packaging and sealing to maintain sample integrity during storage or transport.
Applications
This ASTM standard is primarily applied within the nuclear fuel cycle, where strict quality and regulatory controls are essential. Key practical uses include:
- Quality and Compliance Testing: Verifying that shipped or processed uranium ore concentrates meet moisture content specifications outlined in ASTM C967.
- Sample Preparation for Further Analysis: Dried UOC samples form the basis for additional chemical or atomic absorption analyses as required for nuclear material control or commercial transactions.
- Safety Assurance: Limiting moisture content reduces risks such as radiolysis, corrosion, and instability during transport or storage of UOC.
- Standardized Reporting: Enables consistent and repeatable reporting of moisture levels, facilitating acceptance and verification among suppliers, regulators, and customers within the uranium supply chain.
- Laboratory Accreditations and Audits: Acceptance of this standardized method supports laboratory accreditations and regulatory audits in the nuclear industry.
Related Standards
- ASTM C967 - Specification for Uranium Ore Concentrate: Defines the requirements for moisture and other properties in UOC.
- ASTM C859 - Terminology Relating to Nuclear Materials: Provides relevant terms and definitions.
- ASTM C1022 - Test Methods for Chemical and Atomic Absorption Analysis of Uranium-Ore Concentrate: Methodologies for further analytic procedures using dried samples.
- ASTM C1075 - Practices for Sampling Uranium-Ore Concentrate: Guidance on collecting representative samples.
- ASTM E11 - Specification for Woven Wire Test Sieve Cloth and Test Sieves: Details requirements for laboratory sieves used in sample preparation.
Practical Value
Implementing ASTM C1843-16(2022) ensures reliable, repeatable, and internationally accepted determination of moisture content in uranium ore concentrate. This promotes operational safety, product quality, and regulatory compliance throughout uranium processing and the nuclear supply chain. By adhering to this standard, organizations can confidently certify UOC shipments, prepare accurate material samples for further analysis, and meet industry or governmental requirements, thus ensuring both practical efficiency and regulatory assurance.
