SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 The purpose of this test method is to establish whether a cement complies with a specification limit on Gillmore time of setting. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the time of setting of hydraulic-cement paste by means of the Gillmore needles. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. (Warning—Fresh hydraulic cementitious mixtures are caustic and may cause chemical burns to skin and tissue upon prolonged exposure.)2 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C266-21: Standard Test Method for Time of Setting of Hydraulic-Cement Paste by Gillmore Needles sets out procedures for determining the initial and final setting times of hydraulic-cement paste using the Gillmore needles method. This international standard, developed by ASTM International Committee C01, is essential for assessing whether a cement product meets specification limits regarding its setting times, which are crucial for quality assurance and performance in construction materials.
Hydraulic cements, such as Portland cement, rely on controlled setting times to ensure proper handling and structural integrity in construction applications. By following ASTM C266-21, laboratories and quality control professionals can obtain reliable, repeatable setting time measurements in compliance with industry best practices.
Key Topics
- Setting Time Determination: ASTM C266-21 outlines how to measure both the initial and final time of setting for hydraulic-cement paste using Gillmore needles.
- Gillmore Needles Description: The standard specifies the requirements for the Gillmore initial and final needles, including tip diameter and mass, to ensure accurate results.
- Test Methodology: A cement paste of normal consistency is prepared, molded into a pat, and tested at regulated intervals using the Gillmore needles. The initial set is when the initial needle no longer leaves a complete circular impression, and the final set is when the final needle no longer does so.
- Precision and Reporting: The standard provides detailed guidance on reporting results and includes data regarding the expected precision of within-laboratory and between-laboratory results.
- Safety Considerations: Users are warned that fresh hydraulic-cement mixtures are caustic and may cause chemical burns. The responsibility for safety and regulatory compliance lies with the user.
Applications
ASTM C266-21 is widely used in several key areas:
- Quality Control in Cement Manufacturing: Manufacturers use this test to verify that their hydraulic cement products meet required setting time specifications, critical for quality assurance.
- Construction Materials Testing: Independent laboratories and construction firms apply this method to ensure cements perform as required for specific projects.
- Research and Development: R&D teams utilize the method to evaluate new formulations or additives in cements that may impact setting characteristics.
- Compliance Testing: ASTM C266-21 is often referenced in project specifications or regulatory documents, making compliance mandatory in many jurisdictions.
This standard ensures consistency, reliability, and comparability of results across the industry, which is vital for safety, scheduling, and performance in construction projects.
