ABSTRACT This specification covers molded expanded perlite block, fittings, and pipe thermal insulation intended for use on surfaces with temperatures of certain range. The insulation shall not have visible defects that will adversely affect its service qualities. Different test methods shall be performed in order to determine the properties of the block, fitting, and pipe insulations: density, apparent thermal conductivity, linear shrinkage after heat soaking, flexural strength, compressive strength, weight loss by tumbling, moisture content, water absorption after heat aging, surface bearing characteristics, hot-surface performance, and stress corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steel. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers molded expanded perlite block, fittings, and pipe thermal insulation intended for use on surfaces with temperatures between 80 to 1200°F (27 to 649°C). 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C610-17(2023) - Standard Specification for Molded Expanded Perlite Block and Pipe Thermal Insulation defines the requirements for molded expanded perlite thermal insulation products in block, pipe, and fitting forms. Developed by ASTM International, this standard ensures that expanded perlite insulation delivered for high- and low-temperature thermal applications meets strict quality, performance, and safety guidelines. Intended for use on surfaces with temperatures ranging from 80°F to 1200°F (27°C to 649°C), this specification provides manufacturers, purchasers, and installers with a consistent benchmark for product selection and verification.
Expanded perlite insulation is valued in industrial and commercial settings for its thermal efficiency, fire resistance, lightweight composition, and compatibility with piping, vessels, and equipment. This standard is widely referenced by construction professionals, engineers, and maintenance teams focused on energy management and regulatory compliance.
Key Topics
ASTM C610-17(2023) covers several critical aspects of molded expanded perlite insulation:
- Materials and Composition: Insulation must be primarily made of expanded perlite with silicate binders, with optional reinforcing fibers.
- Product Forms: Includes blocks, pipe segments (split or curved), and various fittings designed to fit standard piping and vessel dimensions.
- Physical and Mechanical Properties: The standard specifies requirements for:
- Density and dimensions
- Flexural strength, compressive resistance, and linear shrinkage after heat exposure
- Weight loss by tumbling and moisture content
- Apparent thermal conductivity at multiple mean temperatures
- Water absorption after heat aging
- Surface burning characteristics and combustibility
- Resistance to stress corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steel
- Dimensional Tolerances: Strict tolerances for product length, width, thickness, and concentricity for pipe insulation ensure reliable fit and performance.
- Quality and Workmanship: Insulation products must be free from defects negatively impacting their service life or insulating quality.
Applications
ASTM C610-17(2023) is the go-to specification for:
- Industrial and Commercial Insulation
- Thermal insulation of high- and low-temperature pipes, tanks, vessels, and equipment in power plants, chemical processing, oil and gas, and HVAC systems
- Fire-resistant thermal barriers for process piping and high-temperature installations
- Energy Efficiency Projects
- Reducing heat loss and supporting compliance with energy codes and sustainability guidelines in facilities management
- Retrofit and New Construction
- Specifying reliable perlite insulation products in project designs for both new construction and upgrades or repairs
- Safety-Critical Environments
- Applications requiring flame spread and smoke development indices per E84 testing and proven non-combustibility in compliance with E136
Engineers and specifiers choose materials meeting ASTM C610 for their proven performance under variable temperatures, resistance to corrosion in contact with austenitic stainless steel, and robustness in physically demanding settings.
Related Standards
ASTM C610-17(2023) references and aligns with several important ASTM standards:
- ASTM C302 & C303: Methods for determining density and dimensions of insulation
- ASTM C335/C335M, C518, C177: Procedures for measuring steady-state thermal transmission properties
- ASTM C356: Testing linear shrinkage after heat exposure
- ASTM C421: Tumbling friability (durability during handling)
- ASTM C795: Specification for use of thermal insulation with austenitic stainless steel
- ASTM E84 & E136: Surface burning characteristics and combustibility testing
For best results in high-performance thermal insulation systems, professionals should ensure compatibility and compliance with these related standards during design, purchasing, and installation.
