Standard Practice for Firing Refractory Concrete Specimens
Standard Practice for Firing Refractory Concrete Specimens
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 This practice is used to standardize the firing conditions of refractory concrete specimens prepared in accordance with Practice C862. The standards are set down to minimize laboratory-to-laboratory variation and do not attempt to duplicate any particular field applications. SCOPE 1.1 This practice covers the firing of specimens made from refractory concretes (castable refractories) in accordance with Practice C862 for cast specimens. The procedure is also recommended for heating rates to be used for high-temperature test methods such as Test Methods C16, C583, etc., when these methods are used to test refractory concretes. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
ASTM C865-22: Standard Practice for Firing Refractory Concrete Specimens provides standardized procedures for firing specimens made from refractory concretes, also known as castable refractories. Developed by ASTM International, this standard is essential for ensuring consistency and reliability in the laboratory testing of refractory concrete, specifically those prepared per Practice C862. The guidelines within ASTM C865-22 are designed to minimize variations in specimen preparation and firing across different laboratories, supporting effective quality control and research in high-temperature applications.
ASTM C865-22 is relevant for laboratories and industries involved in the development, quality assurance, and performance testing of refractory concrete materials. Its primary uses include:
