SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This test method applies to materials used in making epoxy-mortar overlays for concrete pavement. If debonding occurs between the overlay and the pavement, the material is unsuitable. 5.2 This test method evaluates the ability of an overlay to remain bonded to a concrete substrate during repeated thermal cycling in air over a significant temperature range and is not intended to duplicate temperature fluctuations in the field. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the determination of which epoxy-resin formulations are subject to debonding when used as overlays for concrete when the combination of the two is subjected to temperature changes that may be met in the field. 1.2 Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the specification. 1.3 The text of this standard refers to notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of this standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. A specific hazard statement is given in Section 8. (Warning—Fresh hydraulic cementitious mixtures are caustic and may cause chemical burns to exposed skin and tissue upon prolonged exposure.)2 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C884/C884M-23: Standard Test Method for Thermal Compatibility Between Concrete and an Epoxy-Resin Overlay is a key standard published by ASTM International. This standard specifies a laboratory procedure for determining the thermal compatibility of epoxy-resin overlays bonded to concrete substrates. The focus lies in evaluating whether the chosen epoxy-resin system maintains sufficient bond integrity when subject to significant temperature variations, which may occur in service, particularly in concrete pavements.
Ensuring thermal compatibility is crucial for preventing debonding and performance failures in epoxy-mortar overlay systems used for concrete repairs, overlays, and protection. ASTM C884/C884M-23 is recognized by engineers, contractors, manufacturers, and quality control laboratories as an authoritative method for assessing materials before use in the field.
Key Topics
- Purpose of the Test: Evaluates if an epoxy-mortar overlay will debond from concrete during repeated thermal cycles, indicating its suitability for concrete pavement use.
- Test Procedure:
- An epoxy-sand mortar is applied to a cured concrete slab.
- After curing, the composite specimen is exposed to five temperature cycles between 23°C (73.5°F) and -21°C (-6°F).
- The presence of cracks or delamination at the overlay-concrete interface constitutes a failure.
- Measurement Units: Both SI and inch-pound units are included, but they must not be mixed within a single application to ensure compliance.
- Significance: Offers a reliable, laboratory-controlled approach to screen epoxy-resin materials for overlays, reducing the risk of field failure due to poor thermal compatibility.
- Safety Precautions: Highlights the need for appropriate protective measures when handling epoxy resins and cautions about the caustic nature of fresh hydraulic cementitious materials.
Applications
ASTM C884/C884M-23 is widely used across various civil engineering and construction applications where epoxy-resin overlays are specified:
- Concrete Pavement Repair: Ensures that epoxy-mortar overlays can maintain bond integrity during seasonal thermal fluctuations commonly experienced by pavements, bridge decks, and airport runways.
- Protective Overlays: Applied in industrial and infrastructure environments requiring abrasion-, chemical-, and weather-resistant surfaces.
- Quality Control: Assists manufacturers and independent laboratories in validating new or modified epoxy-resin formulations before field deployment.
- Specification Compliance: Referenced in project documentation to ensure that only tested and compatible epoxy systems are utilized in overlays for long-term durability.
Related Standards
ASTM C884/C884M-23 references and complements several other ASTM standards relevant to concrete and epoxy applications:
