ABSTRACT This specification covers fluidifier for grout used for preplaced-aggregate (PA) concrete. Grout ingredients shall conform to the specified requirements for Portland cement, pozzolan, and fine aggregate composition. The fluidifier, tested in grout shall conform to the specified values of reduction in mixing water, expansion, bleeding, increase in water retentivity, initial and final setting time, and compressive strength. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers fluidifier for grout used for preplaced-aggregate (PA) concrete. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 The text of this standard refers to notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard. 1.4 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 8, of this standard: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. (Warning—Fresh hydraulic cementitious mixtures are caustic and may cause chemical burns to exposed skin and tissue upon prolonged exposure.2) 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C937-23: Standard Specification for Grout Fluidifier for Preplaced-Aggregate Concrete is a key standard developed by ASTM International for ensuring the quality and performance of grout fluidifiers used in preplaced-aggregate (PA) concrete. This specification clearly outlines requirements for fluidifiers, focusing on their roles in enhancing grout performance through improved mixing, water reduction, setting time control, water retention, expansion, and compressive strength. It applies to fluidifiers in PA concrete applications and supports standardized practices in construction and civil engineering projects.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
- Covers requirements for grout fluidifiers used in preplaced-aggregate concrete.
- Specifies SI units as standard, with no alternative measurement systems included.
-
Materials and Composition
- Fluidifier must be compatible with grout that uses Portland cement, pozzolan, and specific fine aggregates.
- Adherence to related ASTM standards for ingredients, such as ASTM C150/C150M for cement and ASTM C618 for pozzolans.
-
Physical and Performance Requirements
- Fluidifier must demonstrate:
- Reduction in mixing water demand
- Increase in water retentivity
- Controlled expansion and minimized bleeding after mixing
- Suitability for defined initial and final setting times
- Consistency in compressive strength at 7 and 28 days
- Fluidifier must demonstrate:
-
Testing and Reporting
- Required laboratory testing using referenced ASTM methods for physical properties, including:
- Efflux time (flow cone method)
- Setting times
- Compressive strength
- Expansion and bleeding
- Water retention
- Detailed reporting requirements for test data and computation of results.
- Required laboratory testing using referenced ASTM methods for physical properties, including:
-
Packaging and Marking
- Requires fluidifiers to be packaged in moisture-resistant containers and clearly marked with manufacturer information, mass, usage instructions, and compliance statement.
-
Safety Considerations
- Emphasizes best practices for safety, health, and environmental protection; warns of the caustic nature of fresh hydraulic cementitious mixtures.
Applications
ASTM C937-23 is essential for:
- Civil and Structural Engineering Projects: Used in bridge repair, dam restoration, tunnel linings, and anchoring where PA concrete is specified.
- Preplaced-Aggregate Concrete Construction: Ensures reliable mixing, placement, and setting of grout in applications where aggregate is preplaced and grout is injected.
- Quality Assurance in Concrete Grouting: Enables procurement teams, contractors, and engineers to specify and verify compliant grout fluidifiers to improve durability, uniformity, and performance.
Proper use of grout fluidifiers per ASTM C937-23 can result in:
- Lower water demand, leading to improved concrete density
- Enhanced workability and homogeneity of grout
- Extended pumpability and placement windows for complex pours
- Improved final mechanical properties and durability
Related Standards
ASTM C937-23 is closely linked with other ASTM standards frequently referenced in concrete construction:
