SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 This test method is used to determine if there is any heavy material in the butadiene. It is possible that these materials could be deleterious to a polymerization reaction. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the determination of nonvolatile material in polymerization-grade butadiene. 1.2 WARNING—Mercury has been designated by many regulatory agencies as a hazardous substance that can cause serious medical issues. Mercury, or its vapor, has been demonstrated to be hazardous to health and corrosive to materials. Use Caution when handling mercury and mercury-containing products. See the applicable product Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for additional information. The potential exists that selling mercury or mercury-containing products, or both, is prohibited by local or national law. Users must determine legality of sales in their location. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4.1 The user is advised to obtain LPG safety training for the safe operation of this test method procedure and related activities. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D1025-23: Standard Test Method for Nonvolatile Residue of Polymerization-Grade Butadiene is an internationally recognized standard published by ASTM International. This method specifies the procedure to determine the presence of nonvolatile, heavy material residues in polymerization-grade butadiene. Such residues, if present, may negatively affect subsequent polymerization reactions, making reliable quantification essential for quality assurance in the production of synthetic rubbers and industrial polymers.
Key Topics
-
Purpose: The main objective of ASTM D1025-23 is to assess the purity of polymerization-grade butadiene by measuring the quantity of nonvolatile residues. These residues, if not controlled, can interfere with polymerization processes, reduce product performance, or lead to equipment fouling.
-
Test Method Summary: A measured quantity of liquid butadiene is evaporated in a glass dish at room temperature, then further dried by heating to a constant weight. The residue left is weighed, and its percentage in the original sample is calculated.
-
Significance: Regular use of this test method helps producers and users of butadiene to ensure raw material quality, prevent production issues, and maintain consistent product standards.
-
Hazard Considerations: The standard includes warnings about the use of mercury-containing thermometers due to health and environmental hazards. It also highlights safety measures concerning the highly flammable nature of butadiene and recommends proper training for handling liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Applications
ASTM D1025-23 is widely adopted in industries where the purity of butadiene directly impacts manufacturing outcomes, including:
-
Synthetic Rubber Manufacturing: Nonvolatile residue determination is crucial for tire and elastomer production, as contaminants can affect the properties and processing of rubber.
-
Polymerization Reactions: Ensuring low levels of heavy residue is vital for controlled polymerization reactions, improving catalyst efficiency, polymer consistency, and minimizing reactor fouling.
-
Quality Control Laboratories: Routine analysis of butadiene feedstocks to comply with product specifications and regulatory standards, thereby safeguarding downstream processes and finished product quality.
-
Industrial Safety and Compliance: Supporting compliance with international standards and local regulations concerning hazardous materials handling and product purity.
Related Standards
- ASTM E1: Specification for ASTM Liquid-in-Glass Thermometers - referenced for temperature measurement in the procedure.
- Other Relevant ASTM Standards: Applicable for the testing of C4 and C5 hydrocarbons, quality assessment in petroleum products, and general laboratory practice.
Keywords: ASTM D1025-23, nonvolatile residue, butadiene, polymerization-grade butadiene, standard test method, synthetic rubber, quality control, polymerization reaction, industrial polymer production, residue analysis
Proper implementation of ASTM D1025-23 ensures that polymerization-grade butadiene meets stringent purity requirements, supporting high-quality polymer production and operational safety across the chemical manufacturing industry. Regular testing as outlined in this standard helps minimize contamination risks and supports adherence to international best practices in chemical processing.
