SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 Researchers in the field of coatings have recognized the need for a standardized substrate for evaluating coatings intended for use on cementitious surfaces. This practice describes the preparation of such panels. SCOPE 1.1 This practice covers procedures for molding and curing cementitious panels for use in exposure testing of coatings designed for masonry or cementitious surfaces, although these may be suitable for other tests. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D1734-93(2022) - Standard Practice for Making Cementitious Panels for Testing Coatings, developed by ASTM International, provides a uniform method for preparing cementitious panels used in evaluating coatings intended for masonry and cementitious surfaces. This standard is crucial for researchers and manufacturers in the coatings industry who require consistent and reproducible substrates for comparative performance testing. The practice defines procedures for molding and curing cement-based panels, ensuring that test results are reliable and can be replicated effectively across different laboratories and studies.
Key Topics
- Standardized Panel Preparation: Guidance on mixing ratios, molding, troweling, and curing to produce cementitious panels suitable for coatings testing.
- Material Specifications: Use of White Portland Cement (Type I), graded standard sand, and defined water ratios to achieve uniformity.
- Panel Sizes: Recommendations for panel dimensions, such as 200 x 300 x 15 mm for outdoor exposure tests and 75 x 150 x 15 mm for machine exposure.
- Curing Conditions: Instructions to use moist chambers for at least seven days of curing to ensure panels reach the appropriate consistency and strength.
- Surface Finishing: Procedures to achieve smooth or specified textures without using water during the initial curing period.
- Safety and Compliance: Emphasis on adherence to safety, health, and environmental practices, as well as regulatory requirements.
Applications
- Coatings Performance Testing: This standard is widely used in laboratories and industrial settings to prepare cementitious panels for exposure to paints, sealants, and protective coatings. The consistent substrate helps ensure that differences in results can be attributed to the coating itself, rather than variations in the test panel.
- Quality Control: Manufacturers rely on ASTM D1734 panels for ongoing quality assurance of new formulations or production batches of coatings for masonry, concrete, or cementitious surfaces.
- Product Development: Research and development teams utilize these standardized panels to compare and develop innovative coatings with enhanced durability or weather resistance.
- Regulatory and Certification Testing: Panels made following this standard are often required for demonstrating compliance with industry or governmental performance standards for coatings applied to cementitious substrates.
