SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 This test method provides a measurement of iron content of formaldehyde solutions. The results of these measurements can be used for specification acceptance. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the total iron content of formaldehyde solutions. 1.2 For purposes of determining conformance of an observed or a calculated value using this test method to relevant specifications, test result(s) shall be rounded off “to the nearest unit” in the last right-hand digit used in expressing the specification limit, in accordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E29. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.4 For hazard information and guidance, see the supplier's Material Safety Data Sheet. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D2087-22: Standard Test Method for Iron in Formaldehyde Solutions provides a standardized procedure for determining the total iron content in formaldehyde solutions. Developed by ASTM International, this method is crucial for ensuring product quality and conformance to specifications in the chemical and related industries. The test is performed using spectrophotometric analysis following a colorimetric reaction and is recognized internationally for specification acceptance and regulatory compliance.
Key Topics
-
Purpose: The main goal of ASTM D2087-22 is to accurately measure the amount of iron present in formaldehyde solutions. This determination plays an important role in quality control, especially where material purity impacts downstream applications or regulatory standards.
-
Test Method: The procedure involves evaporating and ashing the sample, reducing iron to its divalent state, and reacting it with o-phenanthroline to produce a colored complex. The intensity of this color, measured at 510 nm with a spectrophotometer, corresponds to the iron concentration.
-
Significance: Iron contamination in formaldehyde solutions can impact processing efficiency and product properties. Use of this standard helps manufacturers validate product specifications and certification, reducing the risk of nonconformance.
-
Units and Rounding: Results are reported strictly in SI units and must be rounded according to ASTM Practice E29 for determining conformance with specifications.
-
Safety Considerations: Users must follow appropriate safety, health, and environmental guidelines, referring to relevant Material Safety Data Sheets for formaldehyde and reagents.
Applications
-
Quality Assurance and Specification Compliance: The standard is widely used by manufacturers and suppliers of formaldehyde to verify iron levels in their products, ensuring compliance with internal and external quality specifications.
-
Production Control: Chemical, resin, and polymer producers use this method to identify and control trace iron contamination during production which can affect product performance, catalyst lifetimes, and shelf life.
-
Regulatory Compliance: Adherence to ASTM D2087-22 supports compliance with international and national regulations, as it was developed under WTO principles for standardization and technical barriers to trade.
-
Research and Development: Laboratories developing new coating, adhesive, or chemical products utilize this method for precise measurement of iron contamination in process intermediates, contributing to improved formulations and manufacturing processes.
Related Standards
-
ASTM D1193 - Standard Specification for Reagent Water: Specifies water purity criteria essential for chemical testing, including the iron test in formaldehyde.
-
ASTM E29 - Practice for Using Significant Digits in Test Data to Determine Conformance with Specifications: Outlines procedures for rounding-off measurement results in specification testing.
-
General Analytical Standards: This method complements other ASTM and ISO protocols for trace element analysis in industrial chemicals.
