SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 The measurement of the strength of leather is often necessary in order to determine its suitability for its intended application. This test method is recommended for use on light, soft leathers, narrow strap, welt, lace and round belt leathers as well as others that cannot be accurately tested by Test Method D2209. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the breaking strength of leather by the grab method. It is intended for use on light, soft leathers; boarded, sueded, or embossed leathers tested on a specimen in the form of a rectangle piece; narrow strap, welt, lace, and round belt leathers; or other leathers that cannot be accurately tested by Test Method D2209. This test method does not apply to wet blue. 1.2 The test method is not recommended for breaking loads over 500 lbf (2200 N) because of slippage of the specimen in the jaws. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D2208-16(2023), titled Standard Test Method for Breaking Strength of Leather by the Grab Method, provides a standardized procedure for determining the breaking strength of leather materials. Developed by ASTM International, this method is specifically designed for testing the strength of light, soft leathers and various narrow leather products such as straps, welts, laces, and round belts. The grab method offers an alternative to other tensile strength tests (such as ASTM D2209) for leather types that may not be suitable for standard tensile testing.
Understanding the breaking strength is vital for manufacturers, quality control professionals, and product designers to ensure that leather goods meet the necessary performance standards for their intended end-uses.
Key Topics
- Breaking Strength Testing: The standard outlines a grab method for measuring the force required to rupture a leather specimen. Measurements are taken at a controlled jaw separation rate, ensuring repeatability and reliability.
- Applicability: The method is intended for light, soft, boarded, sueded, or embossed leathers and specialty forms such as straps, welts, laces, and round belts. It is not applicable to wet blue leather or materials needing forces above 500 lbf (2200 N).
- Consistent Specimen Preparation: Rectangular or narrow strip samples are used, sized to fit the testing apparatus. Thickness measurements are taken to the nearest 0.001 in. (0.025 mm) in three separate locations per specimen.
- Testing Procedure: The leather is clamped in a machine, force is applied at a uniform rate, and the load at rupture is recorded as the breaking strength.
- Precision and Reporting: The standard specifies requirements for precision, reproducibility, and uniform reporting of results, which may be important during quality audits or inter-laboratory comparisons.
Applications
The practical value of ASTM D2208-16(2023) centers on its use in:
- Leather Manufacturing: Ensuring that soft and specialty leathers meet breaking strength requirements before being processed into finished goods.
- Quality Assurance: Routine testing of production lots for straps, laces, belts, and other leather components prone to tensile forces.
- Product Design and R&D: Assessing the suitability of new or alternative leather types for specific applications based on strength data.
- Compliance and Standardization: Meeting customer, regulatory, or industry-specific specifications by referencing a globally recognized test method.
- Inter-laboratory Comparisons: The standard's detailed protocols enable reliable data sharing between manufacturers, suppliers, and testing agencies.
This method is particularly useful for leathers that cannot be accurately or safely tested using traditional tensile strength methods.
