ABSTRACT This specification focuses on the requirements and methods of testing for materials, dimensions and tolerances, hydrostatic-burst strength, chemical resistance, and longitudinal tensile properties, for reinforced epoxy resin pipes and fittings for use in gas mains and services for direct burial and insertion applications. Pipes and fittings covered here are intended for use in the distribution of natural gas, petroleum fuels (propane-air and propane-butane vapor mixtures), and manufactured and mixed gases, where resistance to gas permeation, toughness, resistance to corrosion, aging, and deterioration from water, gas, and gas additives are required. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers requirements and methods of test for materials, dimensions and tolerances, hydrostatic-burst strength, chemical resistance, and longitudinal tensile properties, for reinforced epoxy resin pipe and fittings for use in gas mains and services for direct burial and insertion applications. The pipe and fittings covered by this specification are intended for use in the distribution of natural gas, petroleum fuels (propane–air and propane–butane vapor mixtures), manufactured and mixed gases where resistance to gas permeation, toughness, resistance to corrosion, aging, and deterioration from water, gas, and gas additives are required. Methods of marking are also given. Design considerations are discussed in Appendix X1. 1.2 The values in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.3 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 8, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Note 1: There is no known ISO equivalent to this standard. 1.4 A recommended inplant quality control program is given in Appendix X2. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D2517-18(2023) is the standard specification developed by ASTM International for reinforced epoxy resin gas pressure pipes and fittings. This standard sets forth requirements and testing methods to ensure the quality, performance, and reliability of pipes and fittings designed for gas distribution, particularly in applications where corrosion resistance, toughness, and protection against gas permeation are essential. The specification applies to products intended for direct burial and insertion in gas supply networks handling natural gas, petroleum fuels (propane–air and propane–butane vapor mixtures), and various manufactured and mixed gases.
Key Topics
- Material Requirements: Covers the use of glass fiber-reinforced epoxy resin, specifying the types, grades, and classes suitable for gas pressure pipes and fittings.
- Dimensions and Tolerances: Establishes dimensional tolerances for outside diameter, wall thickness, and fitting compatibility to ensure product interchangeability and correct assembly.
- Performance Testing: Includes methods and criteria for testing:
- Hydrostatic burst strength
- Chemical resistance
- Longitudinal tensile strength
- Crush (parallel plate) strength
- Hydrostatic collapse capability
- Adhesive Requirements: Specifies that adhesives used for joining pipes and fittings must meet minimum shear strength requirements and that proper labeling and usage instructions are provided.
- Marking and Traceability: Mandates detailed product marking, including manufacturer information, size, material codes, standard designation (ASTM D2517), and date of production for traceability.
- Quality Control: Recommends an in-plant quality control program, with routine sampling and testing, to ensure compliance with standard requirements.
Applications
Reinforced epoxy resin gas pressure pipes and fittings specified under ASTM D2517 are primarily used in:
- Natural Gas Mains and Services: Ideal for underground distribution systems where durability and resistance to environmental factors are critical.
- Petroleum Fuel Distribution: Suitable for transporting vapor mixtures such as propane–air and propane–butane, where chemical resistance and toughness are required.
- Mixed and Manufactured Gas Pipelines: Utilized in systems conveying various industrial gas compositions, where permeation resistance and long-term property retention are vital.
- Direct Burial and Insertion Installations: Designed for scenarios where pipes must withstand earth loads, minimize corrosion risk, and be easily joined using adhesives or mechanical fittings.
These pipes and fittings are often selected over metallic alternatives in corrosive environments or where lightweight, flexible installation is advantageous.
