SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 This test method describes a rapid method for separating pigment from solvent-reducible paints. 3.2 This test method is used by paint producers and consumers for product acceptance and process control. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the separation of pigment from solvent-reducible paints and the calculation of the percent pigment from the results of nonvolatile determinations on the total paint and the separated vehicle. Note 1: This test method has been proven to be applicable to most solvent-reducible paints, the exception being those paints containing severely bleeding pigments or pigments such as carbon black that are very difficult or impossible to centrifuge. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D2698-05(2022): Standard Test Method for Determination of the Pigment Content of Solvent-Reducible Paints by High-Speed Centrifuging defines a rapid and reliable method for separating pigments from solvent-reducible paints and calculating their percentage content. Developed by ASTM International, this standard is widely used in the paint and coatings industry for both product acceptance and process control. The high-speed centrifuging technique ensures accurate separation, making it essential for manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and consumers of solvent-reducible coatings.
Key Topics
-
Pigment Separation Methodology: The standard outlines procedures for mechanically separating pigment from solvent-reducible paints using a laboratory centrifuge. It specifies equipment capabilities (high-speed centrifuges achieving 32,000 g or more) to ensure clear vehicle separation from the pigment fraction.
-
Quantitative Calculations: It details how to calculate the pigment content by pairing nonvolatile determinations of both the whole paint sample and the separated vehicle. The results are expressed in percentage terms, enabling clear communication of product composition.
-
Precision and Applicability: The method is suitable for most solvent-reducible paints, with exceptions for those containing pigments that bleed or resist separation (e.g., carbon black). The standard specifies repeatability and reproducibility guidelines for reliable analysis.
-
Safety and International Compliance: Users are mandated to adhere to applicable safety, health, and environmental best practices. This standard aligns with internationally recognized principles for standardization, as endorsed by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Applications
Implementing ASTM D2698-05(2022) offers significant value across various operational contexts:
-
Paint Manufacturing and Quality Control: Manufacturers use this test method to verify pigment content for consistency, batch certification, and regulatory compliance. It supports process control and troubleshooting during paint formulation and production.
-
Product Acceptance by Consumers: Paint buyers and contract specifiers reference this standard in procurement and acceptance testing to ensure that products meet specified pigment contents and perform as intended.
-
Research and Development: R&D laboratories employ ASTM D2698 to evaluate new formulations, optimize pigment loading, and assess how pigment content influences coating properties.
-
Regulatory and Compliance Testing: The method supports compliance with industry and governmental regulations by providing an auditable, standardized approach for pigment content verification in solvent-reducible paints.
Related Standards
For comprehensive testing and evaluation of paint materials, reference these additional ASTM standards:
- ASTM D2369: Standard Test Method for Volatile Content of Coatings - integral for determining nonvolatile content as required by ASTM D2698.
- ASTM D01 Series: Standards for Analysis of Paints and Related Materials - includes broader guidelines for chemical and physical testing procedures.
- International Standards on Coating Analysis: Many organizations align with WTO TBT Committee principles, ensuring ASTM D2698’s applicability in global trade and product certification.
By following ASTM D2698-05(2022), organizations can assure accuracy in pigment content measurement, maintain quality standards, and fulfill both domestic and international market requirements for solvent-reducible paints.
