SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 Tinting strength is one of the most important properties of a white pigment. This test method provides a means of testing this property for quality control. 4.2 This test method is a referee method, and the vehicle for preparing the dispersion and the black for tinting are suggested, but others may be used provided both the purchaser and the seller agree to the changes. 4.3 The results obtained with a muller do not necessarily agree with industrial situations where different dispersing conditions exist. However, dispersing with a muller is a fast, relatively inexpensive way of testing tinting strength for routine quality control. SCOPE 1.1 This test method describes the procedure for determining the relative tinting strength of white pigments by reflectance measurements of black tints. 1.2 This test method is applicable only for comparing the test pigment with a reference standard of the same type and grade. Note 1: Test Method D332 describes a procedure for visual assessment of blue-tinted samples. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D2745-00(2023) - Standard Test Method for Relative Tinting Strength of White Pigments by Reflectance Measurements specifies the procedure for determining the relative tinting strength of white pigments using reflectance measurements of black tints. This standard provides a referee test method, primarily used for quality control in paint and pigment manufacturing. It allows direct, instrumental assessment of a white pigment’s tinting strength compared to a reference standard of the same type and grade. By employing standardized reflectance techniques, this method delivers reliable, repeatable results essential for maintaining consistency in pigment production and supply.
Key Topics
- Tinting Strength Measurement: The procedure focuses on determining how effectively a white pigment tints, using standardized reflectance readings of paint films mixed with black pigment.
- Quality Control: Designed as a rapid and cost-effective approach for routine monitoring of pigment batches, this method assists manufacturers in ensuring product consistency.
- Reference Standard Requirement: The technique is valid solely for comparing a test pigment against an established reference of the same type and grade.
- Instrumental Reflectance Testing: Utilizes tristimulus values (specifically the green-filter Y value) to assess and compare tinting strength, offering higher objectivity than purely visual methods.
- Routine vs. Referee Testing: Procedures and materials can be adapted by agreement between buyer and seller, while the muller dispersing technique provides a benchmark for interlaboratory consistency.
- Flexibility in Materials: While a recommended vehicle and black pigment (lamp black) are specified, alternatives may be used if agreed upon by all parties.
Applications
- Paint and Coatings Industry: Ensures pigment manufacturers supply materials with consistent tinting properties, directly impacting color strength and performance in final coatings.
- Quality Assurance and Production Control: Used as a key routine tool in laboratories to monitor the batch-to-batch reliability of white pigments such as titanium dioxide, lithopone, or zinc oxide.
- Supplier-Purchaser Agreements: Provides a referee method for resolving disputes on pigment strength by instituting clear, objective criteria for measurement and comparison.
- Product Development and R&D: Facilitates development of new white pigments or formulations by enabling quantitative evaluation of tinting efficiency.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports compliance with international trade principles and technical barriers to trade, following guidelines laid out by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Related Standards
- ASTM D332: Describes visual assessment methods for evaluating relative tinting strength, particularly for blue-tinted samples.
- ASTM D2244: Provides guidance on the calculation of color tolerances and differences using instrumentally measured data.
- Other ASTM Paint Standards: ASTM D01 committee standards on paints, coatings, and optical properties offer complementary procedures and definitions for color measurement, pigment characterization, and performance testing.
- International Trade Standards: Aligns with common principles of international standardization, easing acceptance in global markets.
Practical Value
ASTM D2745-00(2023) delivers a vital, cost-effective, and scientifically sound method for measuring the tinting strength of white pigments. Its use of precise reflectance measurements establishes confidence in product quality among suppliers and buyers in the pigment and coatings industries. Adherence to this standard supports production efficiency, maintains end-product color reliability, and underpins fair commercial transactions based on agreed, objective pigment evaluations.
