ABSTRACT This specification covers three types of aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coatings suitable for application to roofing or masonry surfaces by brush or spray. Type I is nonfibered, Type II is fibered with asbestos, and Type III is fibered other than asbestos. The coatings shall adhere to chemical requirements such as composition limits for water, nonvolatile matter, metallic aluminum, and insolubility in CS2. They shall also meet physical requirements as to uniformity, consistency, and luminous reflectance. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers asphalt-based, aluminum-pigmented roof coatings suitable for application to roofing or masonry surfaces by brush or spray. 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined. 1.3 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 8, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D2824/D2824M-18(2024) is a standard specification developed by ASTM International for aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coatings. This standard defines requirements for both nonfibered and fibered roof coatings (excluding asbestos fiber) used on roofing and masonry surfaces. The coatings enhance protection, weather resistance, and solar reflectance for various types of roofs. This specification supports both brush and spray application methods and establishes uniform criteria for composition, performance, and labeling, ensuring consistency and reliability across roofing and waterproofing projects.
Key Topics
-
Types of Coatings:
- Type I: Nonfibered aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coatings, providing a reflective surface without added fibers.
- Type III: Fibered aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coatings, reinforced with non-asbestos fibers for enhanced durability.
-
Composition & Chemical Requirements:
- Limits on water content, nonvolatile matter, metallic aluminum, and insoluble substances.
- Use of an asphalt base, volatile petroleum solvents, and leafing aluminum pigment conforming to ASTM D962.
-
Physical Properties:
- Uniformity requirements ensure coatings do not separate or settle excessively over time.
- Specific consistency standards for each coating type at room temperature.
- Minimum solar reflectance of 50%, even after accelerated weathering and shelf aging, improving roof energy efficiency.
-
Testing & Inspection:
- Reference to standardized test methods, such as ASTM C1549 for solar reflectance and D6511/D6511M for solvent-bearing compounds.
- Material inspection criteria and processes for rejection and resubmittal if requirements are not met.
-
Packaging & Labeling:
- All products must be properly marked to indicate compliance with ASTM International requirements.
- Attention to safety, health, and environmental considerations as per standard guidelines.
Applications
Aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coatings covered by ASTM D2824/D2824M-18(2024) are widely used across the construction and roofing industries for:
- Commercial and Residential Roofs: Providing a reflective, weather-resistant coating for built-up roofs, metal roofs, and various types of masonry surfaces.
- Roof Maintenance and Restoration: Enhancing the service life of existing roofing membranes and surfaces by adding solar reflectivity and water resistance.
- Energy Efficiency: Increasing solar reflectance to reduce roof temperature and lower building cooling needs, beneficial for sustainable building practices.
- Waterproofing: Improving the weatherproof capabilities of roof systems and preventing moisture intrusion.
These coatings are particularly valued for their ease of application by brush, roller, or spray, and their ability to conform to demanding environmental conditions.
Related Standards
When specifying or applying aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coatings, consider related ASTM standards for comprehensive project guidance:
- ASTM C1549 - Method for Determination of Solar Reflectance Near Ambient Temperature Using a Portable Solar Reflectometer.
- ASTM D962 - Specification for Aluminum Powder and Paste Pigments for Paints.
- ASTM D4798/D4798M - Practice for Accelerated Weathering Test Conditions and Procedures for Bituminous Materials (Xenon-Arc Method).
- ASTM D6511/D6511M - Test Methods for Solvent-Bearing Bituminous Compounds.
These closely linked standards support quality assurance, product selection, and compliance in roofing and waterproofing applications.
