SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 Although chlorinated phenol-treated wood has become less common due to environmental concerns, repellent-treated wood is commonly specified in construction. This test method provides a means to verify the presence of a significant level of water repellent protection. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers simple qualitative field or laboratory tests to determine water repellency or the presence of chlorinated phenol2 preservative chemicals in wood products that are specified to be water repellent preservative treated. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D2921-98(2024) - Standard Test Method for Qualitative Tests for the Presence of Water Repellents and Preservatives in Wood Products provides procedures for verifying the presence of water repellent coatings and preservative chemicals in wood products. This international standard, developed by ASTM, is widely recognized and applied in both field and laboratory settings to assess wood treated for enhanced durability. The standard supports industry professionals in ensuring the quality and longevity of wood used in construction and other applications where moisture protection and preservative treatment are critical.
Key Topics
- Water Repellency Verification: The standard describes a simple test using water droplets to determine if wood has been treated with a water repellent. Wood with effective water repellent protection will cause water drops to bead up on the surface, rather than being absorbed.
- Detection of Preservative Chemicals: A qualitative test is included to identify the presence of chlorinated phenol-based preservatives. The method involves burning a wood splinter in a copper coil to observe the characteristic green flame produced by chlorine-containing preservatives.
- Qualitative Analysis: The methods focus on observable, practical results rather than precise quantitative data, making them suitable for rapid assessments in the field or laboratory.
- Applicability: Suitable for wood products specified as water repellent preservative treated, this standard can differentiate between treated and untreated wood using accessible tools and visual inspections.
- Safety and Best Practices: Users must ensure that all relevant safety, health, and environmental regulations are followed during testing.
Applications
ASTM D2921-98(2024) serves a practical role for those who need to confirm the treatment status of wood products, particularly within:
- Construction and Building Projects: Verifying that lumber and wood used in structural or exterior applications have sufficient water repellent and preservative treatment, helping to ensure lasting performance and reduced risk of moisture-related damage.
- Manufacturing and Quality Assurance: Providing manufacturers and QA teams with a reliable test for batch verification where wood preservatives and water repellents are specified.
- Wood Product Inspection: Assisting inspectors, contractors, and regulatory agencies in site assessments and quality control procedures.
- Comparative Analysis: Allowing users to test both treated and untreated samples of the same wood species for side-by-side comparison, improving test accuracy and reliability.

Practical Value
By following ASTM D2921-98(2024), stakeholders can efficiently confirm the effectiveness of water repellents and preservative treatments in wood. This supports increased confidence in product quality, extended wood service life, and adherence to project specifications. Whether you are working in construction, quality control, or regulatory inspection, this standard provides a straightforward approach to verifying wood protection, promoting better outcomes and regulatory compliance in diverse applications.
