SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 Option A—The transverse and longitudinal application rate and variability in application rate of bituminous material applied to a pavement surface using a bituminous distributor can be estimated using Option A. 3.2 Option B—The transverse and longitudinal residual application rate and variability in residual application rate from emulsified asphalt applications to a pavement surface using a bituminous distributor can be estimated by using Option B. SCOPE 1.1 This practice covers the determination of transverse and longitudinal application rate and residual application rate of asphalt distributors in gallons per square yard (or litres per square metre). 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D2995-23 is the internationally recognized standard practice for estimating application rate and residual application rate of bituminous distributors in pavement applications. Issued by ASTM International, this standard is essential for professionals in road construction and pavement maintenance who rely on precise measurement of bituminous material application for quality control and compliance.
The standard specifies procedures for measuring both the transverse and longitudinal application rates of bituminous materials-such as asphalt and emulsified asphalt-applied to pavement surfaces, ensuring uniform distribution and effective road performance.
Key Topics
- Application Rate Measurement: Provides guidance on determining the amount of bituminous material applied per unit area, expressed in gallons per square yard (or litres per square metre).
- Transverse and Longitudinal Direction: Covers procedures for both the width (transverse) and length (longitudinal) of the pavement to assess uniformity and avoid over- or under-application.
- Residual Application Rate: Describes how to estimate the amount of bituminous material that remains on the pavement after application, particularly relevant for emulsified asphalts.
- Option A and Option B Procedures:
- Option A: Estimation of the initial application rate and its variability.
- Option B: Assessment of the residual rate after emulsified asphalt cures.
- Standardized Units: Prescribes inch-pound (U.S. customary) units as standard. SI equivalents provided for informational purposes.
- Safety and Regulatory Compliance: Stresses the responsibility of users to address all relevant safety, health, and environmental concerns.
Applications
ASTM D2995-23 is particularly valuable in the following scenarios:
- Quality Control in Road Construction: Ensures bituminous distributors deliver the designed quantity of asphalt, preventing premature pavement failures due to inconsistent application.
- Pavement Maintenance and Surface Treatments: Used to verify the correct application of seal coats, fog seals, and tack coats, contributing to longer pavement life and improved ride quality.
- Regulatory and Contract Compliance: Enables contractors and agencies to document that the materials applied meet project or regulatory specifications, reducing disputes and rework.
- Performance Testing for Equipment: Assists in calibrating bituminous distributors to achieve optimum spray uniformity, reducing material wastage and improving cost efficiency.
- Training and Best Practices: Provides a standardized methodology for industry personnel, promoting safe and repeatable field practices.
Related Standards
Professionals referencing ASTM D2995-23 may also consider the following related standards for comprehensive quality assurance in pavement applications:
