ABSTRACT This specification covers requirements and test methods for materials, dimensions, workmanship, flattening resistance, impact resistance, pipe stiffness, extrusion quality, joining systems and a form of marking for type PSM poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) sewer pipe and fittings. The pipe and fittings shall be homogeneous throughout and free from visible cracks, holes, foreign inclusions, or other injurious defects. The socket diameters, socket depth, wall thickness, pipe flattening, impact resistance, pipe stiffness, joint tightness, and extrusion quality shall be tested to meet the requirements prescribed. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers requirements and test methods for materials, dimensions, workmanship, flattening resistance, impact resistance, pipe stiffness, extrusion quality, joining systems and a form of marking for type PSM poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) sewer pipe and fittings. 1.2 Pipe and fittings produced to this specification should be installed in accordance with Practice D2321. 1.3 The text of this specification references notes, footnotes, and appendixes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the specification. 1.4 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.5 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test methods portion, Section 8, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D3034-23 is the internationally recognized standard specification for Type PSM Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) sewer pipe and fittings. Developed by ASTM International, this standard sets forth the requirements for materials, dimensions, testing methods, workmanship, joining systems, and markings for PVC sewer pipes and fittings designed for gravity flow applications in non-pressure sewer systems. Products manufactured to this standard provide reliable performance in the drainage of sewage and surface water.
Key Topics
- Materials: Specifies the use of high-quality PVC plastic with defined cell classifications to ensure durability and homogeneity.
- Workmanship: Requires pipes and fittings to be free from visible cracks, holes, or defects and to display uniformity in color, opacity, and density.
- Dimensions and Tolerances: Outlines strict requirements for outside diameter, wall thickness, socket dimensions, and spigot lengths to ensure consistent fit and performance.
- Performance Testing: Incorporates tests for:
- Flattening resistance
- Impact resistance
- Pipe stiffness
- Joint tightness
- Extrusion quality
- Fabricated fitting durability
- Joining Systems: Supports both solvent cement joints and elastomeric gasket joints, promoting watertight connections.
- Marking: Specifies clear and durable marking requirements for pipes and fittings to guarantee traceability and compliance.
Applications
ASTM D3034-23 PVC sewer pipes and fittings are widely used in infrastructure and construction projects requiring gravity drainage systems. Typical applications include:
- Municipal Sewer Systems: Installation of underground pipes and fittings for wastewater and stormwater conveyance.
- Building and Residential Drainage: Non-pressure gravity flow drainage of sewage and surface water in commercial and residential developments.
- Industrial Wastewater Lines: With approval, for non-corrosive, non-pressurized industrial waste conveyance.
- Replacement Projects: Modernization of outdated sewer lines with reliable and corrosion-resistant PVC alternatives.
For optimal performance, installation of these pipes and fittings should follow recognized best practices, such as those detailed in ASTM D2321 for the underground installation of thermoplastic pipe systems.
Related Standards
ASTM D3034-23 references and aligns with several other key ASTM and governmental documents to ensure comprehensive coverage and compatibility:
- ASTM D2321: Practice for Installation of Thermoplastic Pipe for Sewers and Gravity-Flow Applications
- ASTM D1784: Specification for Rigid PVC Compounds
- ASTM D3212: Specification for Joints for Drain and Sewer Pipes Using Flexible Elastomeric Seals

- Federal Standard 123: Marking for Shipment (Civil Agencies)
- MIL-STD-129: Marking for Shipment and Storage (Military Agencies)
Practical Value
Implementing ASTM D3034-23 encourages:
- Quality Assurance: Manufacturers must certify material quality and test compliance, delivering consistent and reliable products.
- Long-Term Performance: Rigid testing and material specifications increase product lifespan and reduce maintenance.
- Interchangeability: Standardized dimensions and joining methods facilitate compatibility between different manufacturers’ products.
- Regulatory Compliance: Conformance with international trade and technical barriers standards facilitates widespread acceptance.
