SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 The method presented is a “short method” that may be used where contamination levels are less than 5000 ppm by weight or volume, temperatures are between 0 °C (32 °F) and 65 °C (150 °F), and the humidity is not considered. The gas is considered as standard air and the velocity is read directly from the instrument. 5.2 This test method is useful for determining air velocities in HVAC ducts, fume hoods, vent stacks of nuclear power stations, and in performing model studies of pollution control devices. SCOPE 1.1 This test method describes the measurement of the average velocity with a thermal anemometer for the purpose of determining gas flow in a stack, duct, or flue (1-5).2 It is limited to those applications where the gas is essentially air at ambient conditions and the temperature, moisture, and contaminant loading are insignificant as sources of error compared to the basic accuracy of the typical field situation. 1.2 The range of the test method is from 1 to 30 m/s (3 to 100 ft/s). 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses after SI units are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D3464-96(2023), Standard Test Method for Average Velocity in a Duct Using a Thermal Anemometer, sets out procedures for measuring the average air velocity in ducts, stacks, or flues using thermal anemometers. Developed by ASTM International’s Committee D22 on Air Quality, this standard targets applications where gases are essentially air under ambient conditions with low contamination, moderate temperature ranges, and negligible moisture impact.
The standard is designed as a “short method,” useful when contamination levels do not exceed 5000 ppm by weight or volume, and temperatures remain between 0 °C (32 °F) and 65 °C (150 °F). Humidity is not considered, and the gas is assumed to be standard air, allowing direct velocity readings from the instrument.
Key Topics
- Measurement Range: Applicable for velocities from 1 to 30 m/s (3 to 100 ft/s).
- Instrumentation: Specifies the use of commercially available thermal anemometers (hot-wire, hot-film, or quartz-coated sensors) with direct readout for accurate air velocity calculations.
- Calibration:
- For velocities above 3 m/s: Calibration is performed with a standard pitot tube, following ASTM D3796.
- For velocities below 3 m/s: Calibration uses a laboratory orifice or nozzle, following ASME PTC 19.5-72.
- Temperature Compensation:
- Temperature-compensated anemometers automatically adjust readings for gas temperature variations, which is essential for field accuracy.
- Temperature-uncompensated (constant-current) anemometers require manual correction if temperature changes.
- Sampling and Data Collection:
- The method includes detailed protocols for selecting sample points across rectangular, circular, or irregular ducts to ensure representative average air velocity.
- Special consideration is given to probe placement and traverse marking to accurately divide duct cross-sections.
Applications
ASTM D3464-96(2023) is widely used in industries and facilities that require reliable airflow measurements, particularly where process air or exhaust flow must be controlled or monitored. Applications include:
- HVAC Ductwork: Ensuring proper airflow in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to maintain indoor air quality and system efficiency.
- Fume Hoods: Verifying exhaust airflow to maintain laboratory safety and regulatory compliance.
- Nuclear Power Plant Vent Stacks: Monitoring air velocities to support environmental and operational safety regulations.
- Pollution Control Studies: Assessing airflow in test models of air pollution control devices.
- Field Measurements: Ideal for field technicians needing straightforward and quick velocity measurements under defined ambient conditions.
Related Standards
Adhering to ASTM D3464-96(2023) often involves understanding or referencing additional standards and technical resources, such as:
- ASTM D1356: Terminology Relating to Sampling and Analysis of Atmospheres.
- ASTM D3796: Practice for Calibration of Type S Pitot Tubes.
- ASME PTC 19.5-72: Application of Fluid Meters, which provides guidance on calibration at lower velocities.
- ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals: Supports knowledge on airflow measurement for building systems.
- World Trade Organization (WTO) TBT Principles: Ensures alignment with globally recognized standards and trade practices.
Practical Value
Employing ASTM D3464-96(2023) ensures reliable, repeatable, and standardized methods for determining average air velocity in industrial and environmental monitoring scenarios. It simplifies calibration and measurement practices, supports regulatory reporting, and drives efficient system design by providing a benchmark method for measuring duct or stack flow under typical operating conditions.
With its clear guidance and broad applicability, this standard is essential for professionals focused on air quality, environmental compliance, and process optimization using thermal anemometers.
