SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 Upon mutual agreement between the purchaser and the supplier, woven fabrics intended for this end use should meet all of the requirements listed in Table 1 of this specification. 5.2 It is recognized that for purposes of fashion or aesthetics the ultimate consumer of articles made from these fabrics may find acceptable fabrics that do not conform to all of the requirements in Table 1. Therefore, one or more of the requirements listed in Table 1 may be modified by mutual agreement between the purchaser and the supplier. 5.2.1 In such cases, any references to the specification shall specify that: “This fabric meets ASTM Specification D3994, except for the following characteristic(s).” 5.3 Where no prepurchase agreement has been reached between the purchaser and the supplier, and in case of controversy, the requirements listed in Table 1 are intended to be used as a guide only. As noted in 5.2, ultimate consumer demands dictate varying performance parameters for any particular style of fabric. 5.4 The significance and use of particular properties and test methods are discussed in the appropriate sections of the specified test methods. SCOPE 1.1 This performance specification covers woven fabrics for use in men's, women's and children's swimwear, composed of any textile fiber or mixture of textile fibers. 1.2 These requirements apply to the length and width directions for those properties where fabric direction is pertinent. 1.3 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test method described in this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D3994-22: Standard Performance Specification for Woven Swimwear Fabrics sets critical requirements for woven fabrics designed for use in swimwear for men, women, and children. Developed by ASTM International, this specification ensures fabrics intended for swimwear meet established performance characteristics necessary for quality, durability, and safety. The standard applies to any textile fiber or blend and encompasses both lengthwise and widthwise fabric directions for relevant properties. ASTM D3994-22 reflects industry best practices for fabric performance and addresses both end-use function and consumer safety.
Key Topics
- Scope: Covers woven fabrics for swimwear applications, including any combination of textile fibers. The requirements are relevant in both fabric directions (warp and weft) where applicable.
- Performance Requirements: Specified performance properties include:
- Breaking strength and elongation
- Tear strength
- Resistance to yarn slippage
- Dimensional stability after laundering
- Multiple aspects of colorfastness (to laundering, light, sea water, pool water, perspiration, ozone, various bleaches, and crocking)
- Flammability (must meet or exceed regulatory requirements)
- Test Methods: References a range of ASTM and AATCC test methods for the evaluation of each property, ensuring consistent and reliable assessment.
- Consumer Consideration: Recognizes that for fashion or aesthetic reasons, some performance requirements may be modified by agreement between purchaser and supplier. Any deviation must be clearly stated.
- Safety Notice: Users must establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices relevant to the application and local regulations.
Applications
ASTM D3994-22 is essential for several stakeholders in the textile and apparel industry:
- Fabric Manufacturers: Provides a benchmark for producing swimwear fabrics that meet industry performance standards necessary for durability, safety, and consumer satisfaction.
- Apparel Brands and Designers: Assists in sourcing high-quality woven swimwear fabrics, ensuring that their products conform to established international requirements for colorfastness, strength, and dimensional stability.
- Testing Laboratories: Uses the referenced test methods within the standard to confirm compliance for batches of swimwear fabrics, supporting both product development and quality assurance processes.
- Retailers and End-Users: Assures that purchased garments are constructed from fabrics designed to maintain performance characteristics under typical conditions of use, such as exposure to chlorine, sun, sweat, and laundering.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports compliance with consumer safety regulations and flammability standards for textile products.
Related Standards
Several standards and test methods are referenced within ASTM D3994-22 to evaluate woven swimwear fabrics:
-
