SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 Surface cleaning is used to prepare concrete surfaces for applying coatings intended for light-duty service. 4.2 Use of this practice alone is not intended where protective systems will be used for continuous or intermittent immersion, mechanical loading, or for protective systems needing optimum bond for satisfactory performance (see Practices D4259 and D4260). SCOPE 1.1 This practice includes surface cleaning of concrete to remove grease, dirt, and loose material prior to the application of coatings. Procedures include broom cleaning, vacuum cleaning, air blast cleaning, water cleaning, detergent water cleaning, and steam cleaning. 1.2 This practice is not intended to alter the surface profile of the concrete but to clean the surface. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D4258-23: Standard Practice for Surface Cleaning Concrete for Coating provides guidelines on cleaning concrete surfaces before applying coatings. Issued by ASTM International, this standard focuses on preparing concrete surfaces by removing grease, dirt, oil, and loose material without altering the surface profile. It is designed for coatings intended for light-duty service and is not recommended as the sole preparation method where high-performance, immersion, or heavy-duty service protective systems are required.
Surface cleaning improves adhesion and longevity of coatings by ensuring contamination-free surfaces, critical for achieving satisfactory results in concrete protection and finishing projects.
Key Topics
- Cleaning Methods: ASTM D4258 outlines several accepted cleaning procedures, including:
- Broom cleaning - effective for removing surface dust and loosely adherent solid contaminants.
- Vacuum cleaning - intended to provide a dust-free surface using industrial vacuums.
- Air blast cleaning - uses a stream of compressed air to lift dust and debris, especially from walls and ceilings.
- Water cleaning - involves the use of potable water to remove soluble contaminants, with hand scrubbing as needed.
- Detergent water cleaning - combines scrubbing with detergent or nonsolvent emulsifiers, followed by thorough water rinsing.
- Steam cleaning - uses high-pressure steam, with or without cleaning agents, for heavy grease and oil removal followed by adequate rinsing.
- Surface Acceptance: Cleaned surfaces must be free of oil, grease, loosely adhering material, and other contaminants prior to coating.
- Testing: Cleaned surfaces can be assessed for:
- pH level, especially after using cleaning agents, according to ASTM D4262.
- Moisture content, crucial for coating adhesion, referenced by ASTM D4263.
- Safety and Compliance: The standard emphasizes following appropriate health, safety, and environmental practices and complying with applicable regulations. It is the user's responsibility to determine and mitigate specific hazards.
Applications
- Preparation for Paints and Coatings: Ensures that concrete surfaces are properly cleaned before application of light-duty coatings, enhancing adhesion and durability.
- Routine Maintenance: Used in commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities for ongoing care and recoating of concrete floors, walls, and ceilings.
- Construction and Renovation: Applies to both new construction (where curing per ACI-308 is required) and restoration projects needing prep for new coatings.
- Limitations: This surface cleaning practice is not suitable where concrete will be subjected to constant moisture, immersion, mechanical loading, or where maximum bond strength is required. For such scenarios, refer to more intensive surface preparation standards.
Related Standards
Professionals using ASTM D4258-23 may also need to reference these related ASTM and ACI standards for comprehensive surface preparation and testing:
