SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 The carbon black extract test procedure provides a uniform and precise method for the gravimetric determination of organic-solvent extractables on carbon black. Accuracy and precision are acceptable for most specification or regulatory purposes, or both. However, carbon black with very low extract (less than 0.02 %) may require a more rigorous extraction procedure. The actual chemical composition of the extract can vary significantly with the type and origin of the carbon black. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the procedure for measuring carbon black solvent extractables. 1.1.1 This test method determines the total material extracted from carbon black by toluene under specified conditions. The procedure is also applicable to other solvents such as cyclohexane, etc. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For a specific precautionary statement, see Section 7. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D4527-18(2023), titled Standard Test Method for Carbon Black-Solvent Extractables, is an internationally recognized standard published by ASTM International. This test method provides a precise gravimetric procedure for determining the total amount of organic-solvent extractables present in carbon black. The method delivers reliable results suitable for most specification, regulatory, and quality control purposes in industries where carbon black is a critical ingredient.
The standard specifies extraction using solvents such as toluene (primary) and cyclohexane, under defined conditions. The extracted material is measured quantitatively, offering important insights into the chemical purity and suitability of carbon black for various industrial applications. SI units are used throughout the standard, ensuring consistency and comparability in global applications.
Key Topics
- Test Method: The procedure involves extracting a specimen of carbon black using a Soxhlet apparatus and toluene or an appropriate alternative solvent for a specified duration, often 48 hours. Residue is then isolated gravimetrically after solvent evaporation.
- Precision and Accuracy: The method is validated for both repeatability (within a laboratory) and reproducibility (across different laboratories), making it robust for compliance and specification requirements.
- Scope of Solvents: While toluene is the recommended solvent, the method allows for other solvents like cyclohexane to be used as appropriate, offering flexibility for various carbon black types and extraction requirements.
- Chemical Variability: The standard acknowledges that extract composition may vary depending on the origin and type of carbon black, making the method adaptable for a range of products in the supply chain.
- Safety and Environmental Considerations: Users are responsible for complying with local safety, health, and environmental guidelines, as some carbon black materials may contain polynuclear aromatic compounds.
Applications
ASTM D4527-18(2023) is valuable in several sectors, including:
- Rubber and Plastic Manufacturing: Ensures the purity of carbon black used as a reinforcing agent, preventing issues from excess extractables that can affect performance.
- Quality Control: Used by QC labs to verify supplier compliance and internal specifications regarding total solvent extractables in carbon black batches.
- Regulatory Compliance: Helps manufacturers meet international standards for chemical content and safety in carbon black-containing products.
- Materials Research: Supports product development and comparative studies of different carbon black types or processing methods.
- Environmental Monitoring: Assists in confirming that carbon black products are within acceptable extractable residue limits for various applications.
By using this standard, laboratories and manufacturers can guarantee product integrity, enhance reproducibility, and meet regulatory and industry requirements efficiently.
