SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 This test method may be used in quality control laboratories when the repeated analysis of titanium dioxide in similar paints may be required. Reagents and time are kept to a minimum when this test method is used in place of wet chemical analysis such as in Test Methods D1394. However, reproducibility and repeatability are not as good as in Test Methods D1394. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the atomic absorption (AA) analysis of titanium dioxide content in pigments recovered from whole paint. It is applicable to quality control situations where the same type of product is repeatedly analyzed. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific hazard statements are given in Section 7. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D4563-02(2022) is the established standard test method for determining the titanium dioxide content in pigments recovered from whole paint using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AA). Developed by ASTM International, this method is designed to support quality control laboratories in industries where the analysis of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) in similar paint products is routinely required. By utilizing atomic absorption, the method offers an expedited alternative to traditional wet chemical analysis, minimizing both reagent use and testing time without significantly compromising on accuracy for repetitive analyses.
Key Topics
- Test Method: This standard describes the process for preparing and analyzing pigment samples from whole paints using atomic absorption spectroscopy to determine their TiO₂ content.
- Scope of Use: Primarily intended for quality control scenarios involving repetitive testing of products with similar compositions, such as manufacturing batches of paints and coatings.
- Sample Preparation: The protocol involves ashing the paint sample at high temperature, digesting it with acids, and then analyzing it by AA spectroscopy.
- Measurement and Calculations: The result is expressed in mass percent of titanium dioxide, utilizing only SI units.
- Precision and Repeatability: The method is optimized for efficiency but acknowledges that repeatability and reproducibility may not match classical wet chemical analysis standards, such as those outlined in ASTM D1394.
- Safety and Compliance: Users must establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices when handling hazardous reagents and comply with local regulations.
Applications
ASTM D4563-02(2022) is especially valuable in the following contexts:
- Quality Control in Paint Manufacturing: Enables manufacturers and laboratories to reliably and quickly determine the titanium dioxide content in paint pigments, ensuring product consistency and regulatory compliance.
- Process Optimization: Minimizes laboratory workload and reagent consumption compared to traditional wet chemical methods, increasing throughput for high-frequency testing environments.
- Cost Efficiency: Reduces overall testing expenses due to its faster analysis time and minimal reagent use, making it suitable for routine use in industrial settings.
- Research and Product Development: Assists in formulation verification and optimization when developing new paint products that require specified titanium dioxide concentrations.
Related Standards
For a comprehensive approach to titanium dioxide analysis and paint quality control, consider the following related ASTM standards:
- ASTM D1394: Test methods for chemical analysis of white titanium pigments - referenced as an alternative method with higher reproducibility.
- ASTM D1193: Specification for reagent water - referenced for the required water purity in testing.
- ASTM E180: Practice for determining the precision of ASTM methods for analysis and testing of industrial and specialty chemicals.
- ASTM E288: Specification for laboratory glass volumetric flasks - cited for equipment used in the procedure.
Practical Value
Implementing ASTM D4563-02(2022) enhances laboratory efficiency and operational cost-effectiveness by offering a streamlined AA spectroscopy method for determining titanium dioxide content in recovered paint pigments. Its adoption ensures consistent product quality and supports manufacturers in meeting industry standards and customer expectations for paint performance. Whether for routine quality checks, batch verification, or research applications, this standard empowers users with a reliable and efficient approach to pigment content analysis.
