SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers flexible sheet made from ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) intended for use in single-ply roofing membranes exposed to the weather. The tests and property limits used to characterize the sheet are values to ensure minimum quality for the intended use. The sheet may be non-reinforced, fabric- or scrim-reinforced, or fabric-backed vulcanized rubber sheet. 1.2 In-place roof system design criteria, such as fire resistance, field seaming strength, material compatibility, and uplift resistance, among others, are factors that must be considered but are beyond the scope of this specification. 1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D4637/D4637M-15(2021)e1 is the international standard specification for flexible sheets made from ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) used in single-ply roofing membranes. Established by ASTM International, this specification ensures minimum quality requirements for EPDM sheeting intended for roofing applications where weather exposure is expected. The standard addresses both non-reinforced and reinforced (fabric or scrim) EPDM sheets, as well as fabric-backed vulcanized rubber sheets.
This specification sets the minimum test requirements for material quality, physical properties, marking, packaging, and identification. It is widely referenced in the roofing industry, particularly for projects that demand reliable, weather-resistant, and durable roofing membranes.
Key Topics
-
Material Types:
- Type I: Non-reinforced EPDM sheet
- Type II: Scrim or fabric-reinforced EPDM sheet
- Type III: Fabric-backed EPDM sheet
-
Quality Assurance:
- Specifies physical property requirements such as thickness, tensile strength, elongation, tear resistance, brittleness, and ozone resistance.
- Mandates testing methods and tolerances using recognized ASTM test procedures to verify compliance.
-
Workmanship Standards:
- Ensures sheets are free from manufacturing defects, pinholes, and foreign matter.
- Requires straight and flat edges for effective field seaming.
-
Marking and Packaging:
- Sheets must be marked with standard designation, manufacturer, type, and other relevant identification at regular intervals.
- Packaging must protect the material and be properly labeled for ease of handling and traceability.
-
Safety and Unit Consistency:
- Advises users on the responsibility to observe appropriate safety and environmental practices.
- Distinguishes between SI and inch-pound units to prevent misapplication or non-conformance.
Applications
EPDM roofing sheets specified under ASTM D4637/D4637M are widely used in commercial, industrial, and residential roofing applications that require:
- Single-ply roofing membranes for flat or low-slope roofs
- Durable, flexible, and weather-resistant membrane solutions resistant to UV, ozone, and environmental stressors
- Systems where waterproofing and longevity are critical
These membranes are often installed on office buildings, factories, warehouses, and other structures requiring cost-effective, long-lasting roof protection. EPDM membranes can be adhered, ballasted, or mechanically fastened, offering versatility in installation. Their robust performance makes them a preferred choice in areas with significant temperature fluctuations and challenging weather conditions.
Related Standards
Several related ASTM standards are referenced within ASTM D4637/D4637M, as they establish test methods or practices for qualifying materials and verifying performance, including:
- ASTM D412 - Test Methods for Vulcanized Rubber and Thermoplastic Elastomers-Tension
- ASTM D471 - Effect of Liquids on Rubber Properties
- ASTM D412, D518, D573, D624, D751 - Methods for testing tensile strength, cracking, aging, tear resistance, and coated fabrics
