SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 These test methods are used to determine the basicity of leather when used in accordance with Test Method D4654. SCOPE 1.1 These test methods are intended for use in determining the total, neutral, and combined acid sulfate in mineral-tanned leather. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D4655-95(2023) - Standard Test Methods for Sulfates in Leather (Total, Neutral, and Combined Acid) outlines internationally recognized procedures for determining the sulfate content in mineral-tanned leather. These test methods enable laboratories and manufacturers to accurately measure the levels of total, neutral, and combined acid sulfates, providing essential data for ensuring leather quality and safety. Developed by ASTM International and approved by relevant global authorities, this standard supports the chemical analysis needs of the leather industry and related sectors.
Key Topics
- Scope: The standard is specifically designed for mineral-tanned leather, focusing on identifying and quantifying total, neutral, and combined acid sulfates.
- Significance: Accurate sulfate determination is vital for assessing the basicity of leather, which affects product quality and performance, especially when evaluated in accordance with ASTM D4654.
- Procedure Highlights:
- Sampling requirements, including specimen weight and handling.
- Use of highly precise volumetric and weighing equipment.
- Essential reagents and their specified strengths (e.g., ammonium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, barium chloride, sodium hydroxide).
- Detailed filtration, precipitation, and titration steps for sulfate analysis.
- Calculations to determine sulfate concentrations, ensuring results are reported to the nearest 0.1%.
- Units and Safety: Only SI units are recognized as standard. Users are responsible for adhering to appropriate safety, health, and environmental protocols.
Applications
ASTM D4655-95(2023) plays a critical role in the following areas:
- Quality Control in Leather Manufacturing:
- Ensures products meet specified sulfate content limits for durability and performance.
- Validates chemical processing steps in mineral tanning to maintain consistent production quality.
- Material Compliance and Certification:
- Used by laboratories, regulatory agencies, and suppliers to demonstrate adherence to international and industry standards.
- Supports procurement and material acceptance processes by providing traceable and reproducible test results.
- Research and Development:
- Assists in developing new tanning processes and additives by supplying comparative data on sulfate levels.
- Enables investigation of chemical changes in leather during processing.
- Regulatory and Environmental Assurance:
- Helps fulfill global trade requirements by following recognized principles outlined by the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
- Facilitates documentation for environmental safety and health compliance.
