SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 These test methods are suitable for quality control, specification testing, and research. The specific gravity is necessary when converting kinematic viscosity to absolute viscosity. SCOPE 1.1 These test methods measure the specific gravity of polyols. Test Method A measures the specific gravity of polyols using a pycnometer and Test Method B lists a reference for measuring the specific gravity of liquids using a density meter that is applicable to polyols (see Note 1). 1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Note 1: There is no known ISO equivalent to this standard. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D4669-24 - Standard Test Method for Polyurethane Raw Materials: Determination of Specific Gravity of Polyols is an international standard developed by ASTM for measuring the specific gravity of polyols used in polyurethane manufacturing and research. Specific gravity is a critical property required for accurate quality control, specification testing, and the conversion of kinematic viscosity to absolute viscosity in polyol products. This standard outlines two accepted methods utilizing either a pycnometer or a digital density meter to provide reliable and standardized results.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
- Covers methods to determine the specific gravity of polyols at 25°C.
- Applicable for quality control, specification, and research purposes in the polyurethane industry.
- Includes detailed guidance on appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices.
-
Test Methods
- Test Method A: Utilizes a calibrated pycnometer to measure specific gravity at controlled temperature settings.
- Test Method B: References the use of a digital density meter as detailed in ASTM D4052, suitable for measuring specific gravity of liquids including polyols.
-
Precision and Repeatability
- Provides precision estimates based on comparable test methods.
- Includes recommended procedures for minimizing bias and improving reproducibility, though official bias estimation is not provided.
-
Terminology
- Defines specific gravity as the ratio of the weight in air of a given volume of polyol to an equal volume of water at 25°C.
-
Updates and Compliance
- Developed in accordance with global standardization principles set by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade Committee.
- No direct ISO equivalent for this method.
Applications
-
Quality Control in Manufacturing
- Vital for consistent production of polyurethane by ensuring polyol batches meet required specifications for density and composition.
-
Product Specification and Certification
- Used for verifying product certification to meet client or regulatory requirements.
- Assists in maintaining product traces and batch quality in supply chains.
-
Research and Development
- Enables controlled and reproducible measurement for R&D programs focused on new polyurethane formulations or improvements.
-
Viscosity Conversion
- Specific gravity data is necessary when converting kinematic viscosity measurements to absolute viscosity, optimizing process design.
-
Sampling and Laboratory Procedures
- Suitable for routine laboratory use as well as analyses requiring greater precision in special applications.
