SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 This test method is used to determine the nonvolatile content of silanes, siloxanes, and silane-siloxane blended materials used in masonry water-repellent treatments. It can be used for the purpose of calculating the volatile organic compound (VOC) content of these materials under specified test conditions. SCOPE 1.1 This test method describes a procedure for the determination of the nonvolatile content (Ns) of silanes, siloxanes, and blended silane-siloxane materials used in masonry water repellent treatments and is applicable to both solvent- and water-borne materials. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For a specific hazard statement, see Section 7. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D5095-91(2022) is the international standard test method established by ASTM International for the determination of the nonvolatile content in silanes, siloxanes, and silane-siloxane blends used in masonry water repellent treatments. This method is essential in ensuring the quality, performance, and regulatory compliance of water-repellent solutions applied to masonry surfaces. The test applies to both solvent-borne and water-borne materials, supporting precise calculation of volatile organic compound (VOC) content, which is increasingly significant in meeting environmental guidelines.
Key Topics
- Nonvolatile Content Determination: The method outlines a controlled procedure for quantifying the percentage of nonvolatile matter in silane, siloxane, and blended formulations, which directly influences the effectiveness and durability of water repellents.
- Testing Procedure: The standard requires the weighing of the sample with a catalyst solution, incubation at room temperature, and subsequent heating at a specified temperature and duration to drive off volatile components. The nonvolatile residue is then calculated by subtracting the weight of the catalyst solution’s solids.
- Precision and Variability: ASTM D5095-91(2022) includes guidance on repeatability and reproducibility, allowing laboratories and manufacturers to assess the reliability of measurements. It provides criteria for acceptable variance between test results within and between laboratories.
- Safety and Compliance: The standard emphasizes the importance of adequate ventilation and lab safety, especially due to the use of solvents and reactive materials. Users must assess and mitigate any specific hazards associated with their processes.
Applications
- Quality Control in Manufacturing: Producers of masonry water repellents use this standard method to verify product formulation consistency and confirm the correct proportion of active silane, siloxane, or their blends.
- Regulatory Compliance: The determined nonvolatile content enables calculation of VOC content, helping manufacturers meet environmental regulations and industry standards related to emissions and worker safety.
- Product Development and Formulation: Chemical formulators rely on this method to optimize the balance between performance (water repellency, longevity) and environmental impact. The procedure supports innovation in developing low-VOC and sustainable masonry protection solutions.
- Performance Assessment: Construction professionals and material specifiers use nonvolatile content data to select suitable water repellent treatments based on durability requirements and substrate compatibility.
