SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This test method gives a measure of a key property of hook and loop touch fasteners which is of interest to users of such devices. This is a means of determining the resistance to separation when forces are applied parallel to the plane of the fastener. 5.2 In the case of a dispute arising from differences in reported test results when using this test method for acceptance testing of commercial shipments, the purchaser and the supplier should conduct comparative tests to determine if there is a statistical bias between their laboratories. Competent statistical assistance is recommended for the investigation of bias. As a minimum, the two parties should take a group of test specimens which are as homogenous as possible and which are from a lot of hook and loop of the type in question. The test specimens should then be randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratory for testing. The average results from the two laboratories should be compared using Student’s t-test and an acceptable probability level chosen by the two parties before the testing began. If a bias is found, either its cause must be found and corrected or the purchaser and the supplier must agree to interpret future test results in the light of the known bias. SCOPE 1.1 This test method measures the shear strength of hook and loop touch (CRE) fasteners using a recording constant rate of extension tensile testing machine. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D5169-98(2021) is the internationally recognized standard test method for determining the shear strength of hook and loop touch fasteners using a dynamic (constant rate of extension) method. This test provides a key evaluation of the resistance to separation when parallel forces are applied to the fastener. Developed by ASTM International, this method is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of hook and loop fastener systems to assess performance and ensure product reliability in various applications.
Key Topics
- Shear Strength Measurement: The standard defines the procedure to measure the shear resistance of hook and loop fasteners. Specifically, it assesses how well the fastener resists separation by forces applied parallel to its plane.
- Test Apparatus: Testing requires a recording constant rate of extension tensile testing machine and a specific roller for material engagement. This ensures consistent and accurate results across different laboratories.
- Standard Test Conditions: The method prescribes sample conditioning (temperature and humidity) and preparation, ensuring uniformity in test specimens. Samples are typically 1 inch wide and conditioned to moisture equilibrium.
- Sample Selection and Testing: The procedure involves random selection of homogeneous samples, controlled engagement, and the application of dynamic shear force across all orientation configurations.
- Precision and Bias: The standard includes guidance for repeatability and instructions for resolving differences in test results between laboratories, recommending comparative testing and statistical analysis when necessary.
- Use of Inch-Pound Units: Measurements are specified in inch-pound units, with SI units provided for reference only.
Applications
ASTM D5169 is widely applied in industries where hook and loop fasteners are used, including:
- Textiles and Apparel: Ensures that touch fasteners on clothing, shoes, and accessories meet strength and durability requirements.
- Medical Devices: Used to assess the performance of fasteners in medical braces, supports, and devices where secure closure and easy adjustability are critical.
- Automotive and Aerospace: Verifies shear strength for fasteners used in vehicle interiors and equipment panels, where secure but temporary fastening is needed.
- Consumer Products: Applied in the quality control of fasteners used in sports gear, children’s products, and home furnishings.
- Industrial Applications: Evaluates fasteners used in packaging, cable management, and assembly systems.
Using ASTM D5169 helps suppliers and buyers ensure that hook and loop fasteners comply with international quality benchmarks, facilitating reliable performance in end-use environments and enabling fair comparisons between products.
Related Standards
For broader context or complementary testing procedures, the following ASTM standards are commonly used alongside ASTM D5169:
- ASTM D76/D76M - Specification for Tensile Testing Machines for Textiles
- ASTM D123 - Terminology Relating to Textiles
- ASTM D618 - Practice for Conditioning Plastics for Testing
Reference to these standards supports the correct selection of equipment, clarifies technical terminology, and ensures proper sample conditioning during the testing process.
Conclusion
ASTM D5169-98(2021) is a definitive method for evaluating the shear strength of hook and loop touch fasteners. Its wide applicability supports quality assurance, product development, and compliance with international best practices, making it a critical standard in the fastener, textile, automotive, and healthcare industries. Employing this standard strengthens supplier-customer relationships through objective shear strength data and supports regulatory and performance requirements in global commerce.
