SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This test method is useful in quality and cost control during the manufacture of pile yarn floor covering. Both appearance and performance can be affected by changes in the tuft height. 5.1.1 In case of a dispute arising from differences in reported test results when using this test method for acceptance testing of commercial shipments, the purchaser and the supplier should conduct comparative tests to determine if there is a statistical bias between their laboratories. Competent statistical assistance is recommended for the investigation of bias. As a minimum, the two parties should take a group of test specimens that are as homogeneous as possible and are from a lot of material of the type in question. The test specimens should then be randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratory for testing. The average results from the two laboratories should be compared using Student's t-test for unpaired data and an acceptable probability level chosen by the two parties before testing is begun. If a bias is found, either its cause must be found and corrected or the purchaser and the supplier must agree to interpret future test results in view of the known bias. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the determination of tuft height using a grooved specimen holder. It applies to cut-pile and loop-pile floor covering after adhesive backing has been applied to bond the pile yarn to the backing fabric. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D5823-19(2024) - Standard Test Method for Tuft Height of Pile Floor Coverings defines a precise laboratory method for measuring the tuft height of pile yarn floor coverings, including both cut-pile and loop-pile types. This standard, developed by ASTM International, supports critical quality and cost control processes in the manufacturing and acceptance of textile floor coverings. Tuft height significantly impacts product appearance and performance, making accurate and repeatable measurement essential in commercial production and quality assurance.
Key Topics
- Scope: This test method applies after adhesive backing is bonded, using a grooved specimen holder to measure individual tuft elements. Both inch-pound and SI units are referenced, but inch-pound is the standard.
- Significance: Accurate tuft height measurement helps maintain consistent product quality, affects appearance, and ensures compliance with flooring specifications.
- Sampling and Testing:
- Specific procedures are given for cut-pile and loop-pile coverings.
- Emphasizes homogeneous sampling and random assignment of specimens for laboratory testing.
- Comparative testing between supplier and purchaser laboratories is recommended if discrepancies arise.
- Reporting: Requirements include detailed test reporting, specifying whether tufts are from cut or loop pile, average tuft heights, and sampling method.
- Precision and Bias: The method is highly repeatable and accepted as a referee method. Interlaboratory test data confirm reproducibility.
Applications
- Quality Control: ASTM D5823 is primarily used by manufacturers and quality assurance labs to ensure floor coverings meet tuft height specifications, helping maintain consistent aesthetics and performance.
- Product Development: Designers and engineers use the method to verify new product lines or modifications during research and development stages.
- Dispute Resolution: Standardized procedures facilitate fair acceptance testing and comparative evaluation if there is a disagreement between buyers and suppliers on test results.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports compliance with international market requirements, as referenced by the World Trade Organization's Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) principles.
- Industry Communication: Provides a common language for specifying and verifying tuft height among manufacturers, suppliers, and customers in the flooring industry.
Related Standards
- ASTM D5684: Terminology relating to pile floor coverings; provides definitions critical to interpreting tuft height data.
- ASTM D123: Terminology relating to textiles; offers broader textile definitions relevant to this method.
- ASTM D1776/D1776M: Practice for conditioning and testing textiles; outlines standard environmental conditions for accurate measurement.
- ASTM D1909: Provides commercial moisture regains for textile fibers which may influence sample conditioning.
- ASTM E122: Practice for calculating sample size in statistical sampling, key for determining the number of specimens in a lot.
By referencing ASTM D5823-19(2024), flooring manufacturers and quality assurance professionals can ensure that tuft height measurement for pile floor coverings is consistent, repeatable, and internationally recognized. This supports product quality, facilitates dispute resolution, and aligns with global trade standards-all critical benefits for the textile and flooring industry.
