SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This practice allows the adsorption capacity at equilibrium of an activated carbon for adsorbable constituents present in water to be determined. The Freundlich K and 1/n constants that can be calculated based upon information collected using this practice can be used to estimate carbon loading capacities and usages rates for the constituent present in a water stream at other concentrations. SCOPE 1.1 This practice covers the assessment of activated carbon for the removal of low concentrations of adsorbable constituents from water and wastewater using the bottle point isotherm technique. It can be used to characterize the adsorptive properties of virgin and reactivated activated carbons. 1.2 This practice can be used in systems with constituent concentrations in the low milligrams per litre or micrograms per litre concentration ranges. 1.3 This practice can be used to determine the adsorptive capacity of and Freundlich constants for volatile organic compounds provided the handling procedures described in this practice are followed carefully. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D5919-96(2022), titled Standard Practice for Determination of Adsorptive Capacity of Activated Carbon by a Micro-Isotherm Technique for Adsorbates at ppb Concentrations, is a standard developed by ASTM International that specifies a reliable method for evaluating the adsorption capacity of activated carbon used in the removal of low concentrations of contaminants from water and wastewater. The standard applies especially where adsorbable constituents are present at parts-per-billion (ppb) or low milligrams-per-liter (mg/L) levels. This practice enables the characterization of both virgin and reactivated activated carbon, providing essential parameters for estimating carbon performance, including loading capacities and usage rates.
Key Topics
- Activated Carbon Adsorption: Assessment of adsorptive properties of activated carbon for removing trace contaminants in aqueous environments.
- Bottle Point Isotherm Technique: Use of this laboratory technique to generate isotherm data at low contaminant concentrations, minimizing headspace and loss of volatile compounds.
- Freundlich Constants: Calculation of Freundlich K and 1/n constants from the equilibrium data, which are critical for predicting carbon performance at different concentrations.
- Volatile Organic Compounds: Careful handling procedures allow the method to be applied to systems involving volatile organic chemicals.
- Water Quality Variables: Considerations include effects of temperature, pH, ionic strength, and organic matter on adsorption results.
Applications
ASTM D5919-96(2022) is highly relevant in several contexts related to water quality and the environmental industry:
- Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants: Determining which type and quantity of activated carbon to use for optimal removal of specific organic contaminants, especially during design and optimization phases.
- Environmental Compliance: Providing data needed to meet regulatory requirements on water quality, particularly for trace contaminants and priority pollutants found in water effluents.
- Research and Development: Enabling laboratories to compare adsorptive performance between different activated carbon products under controlled conditions at low contaminant levels.
- Quality Assurance: Characterizing incoming batches of activated carbon (virgin or reactivated) for consistency and suitability for intended applications.
- Risk Assessment: Supporting estimates of removal efficiency for specific pollutants, helping inform public health and safety decisions in relation to drinking water or treated wastewater.
Related Standards
Several ASTM standards and documents are closely related to or referenced within ASTM D5919-96(2022):
- ASTM D1129 – Terminology Relating to Water: Provides definitions relevant to water analysis and testing procedures.
- ASTM D1193 – Specification for Reagent Water: Ensures the use of reagent grade water in laboratory practices to achieve accurate, reproducible results.
- ASTM D2652 – Terminology Relating to Activated Carbon: Offers standardized terminology for consistency across activated carbon methods.
- ASTM D2867 – Test Methods for Moisture in Activated Carbon: Useful for accurately determining carbon dosages and correcting for moisture.
- ASTM D3370 – Practices for Sampling Water from Flowing Process Streams: Guides on appropriate sampling techniques to avoid contamination or bias.
- International Principles: The standard aligns with principles established by the World Trade Organization (WTO) Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee for international standardization.
Practical Value
By following ASTM D5919-96(2022), laboratories and water treatment professionals can reliably quantify the adsorptive capacity of activated carbon at trace contaminant levels-a capability vital for ensuring product performance and regulatory compliance. The bottle point isotherm technique described provides robust data for decision-making, supporting both operational efficiency and environmental protection. When used in conjunction with related ASTM standards, this practice forms part of a comprehensive quality framework for water purification technologies.
